A wind chime near where the cats hang out, attached to a length of string which goes over a branch or stake to somewhere you can give it a good pull without alerting them (kitchen window?) scares them off. We had less cat poo in the garden, no pathetic little feathery corpses and no flipping cat hairs all over the arbour cushions for quite a while but I think it's time to rig one up again.

    The Animal Welfare Act 2006

The Animal Welfare Act which passed into law in 2006 states that all animals kept as pets in the UK must have provision made for a suitable living environment, including the freedom to exhibit normal and natural behaviour patterns, a suitable diet, and protection from pain, suffering, wilful neglect and preventable disease.

It also covers the penalties for wilful neglect or causing deliberate harm to an animal (whether owned or not) which can include a prison sentence, fines of up to £20,000, and being banned from keeping animals. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 also states that it is illegal to sell an animal of any type to a person of less than 16 years of age.

Please if you go for the water pistol - just use water over the years I have had to wash the cat cos its come home with oil, glue and one time some sort of black oil/tar substance which even the vet didn't know what it was and their strong cleaner didn't work had to be shaved out of the fur.

    Couldn't agree more.

I'm happy with cats crapping in my garden, if the owners are happy for me to put it back through their letterbox, and I can bill them for the inconvenience.

moth balls placed around the garden will deter them but they don't smell too nice so use gloves

I've had a little read of the Animal Welfare Act http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/45/pdfs/ukpga_20060045_en.pdf

The message I take away from reading it is that if you're going to shoot your neighbours' cats, you must be a good shot and kill the animal first time, so that it doesn't suffer.

I'd just like to add that I don't own a gun, and have never shot anybody's cat. Even though it's sometimes tempting.

Thing is cat owners have two bites of the cherry, you'd get done for criminal damage if it didn't suffer.

You'd have a new plug if you tried.

Cats actually go where they are welcome. Our ruffian, which we pay the vets bill on!, has at least five other houses where he gets affection. Neighbore abhors cats, and he by-passes their place complete!

Blackbeard - I cannot possibly agree. I have never liked cats, and believe that is *exactly* why they invade my garden, and when I visit their houses, seek my lap to sit on. I am quite sure because they give me superior looks as they do so.

It never ceases to amaze me how defensive animal owners can be.

I often wonder how your average cat owner would like to roll up to their work place and be confronted by a pile of excrement...once round that, encounter another on their desk, another on the computer whilst standing in another pile under their desk?....etc..

I like cats and dogs but there is no excuse for dog owners not 'picking up' their deposits. Obviously, cats are harder to keep track of...but why should others endure that vomit inducing encounter on a daily basis?

I suspect that reason alone makes next doors/ local cat objectionable to many and yet another close encounter with a pile of cat !!!! may have even the most rational person reach for a loaded [STRIKE]gun[/STRIKE] water pistol!
If you want somebody you can trust...trust yourself
