  • Having said that about cider orchards in decline we make gallons of the stuff every year from windfalls from all sorts of varieties of apples just growing in gardens all over the village. The girls have got us the right size and capacity of processing equipment over the years and we scrat and juice apples for other folk too so we'd have a little cottage industry come post Brexit times and would be (hopefully) in demand for home made 'plonk' production for bartered produce if folks wanted apples processed, can't be a bad thing I feel!

There are a lot of apple trees on council land near me, and they encourage people to use them as well .... I've always picked a few, but I'm going to get more going on this year. Equipment ... I think I have enough jars, and I have the stand for the straining process ... oh boy!

    I don't need no. 3 (as I don't have a vehicle).

    1. That was definitely first when I still had a mortgage. Oh yes...
    2. yep...
    4. to a certain extent
    5. yep....

My personal no. 3 since I moved here (ie poor public transport) is to carry round the phone number of the local taxi firm I use - in case I've landed up somewhere in the "back of Back of Beyond" after the buses have stopped for the day (which is around about dinnertime and lucky if there are any of a Sunday).

I've got a personal no. 6 since moving here too - that I've got a pretty fair idea of bed & breakfast places in any other places I go regularly as a "fallback if taxi fallback" position didnt work out if I were stuck somewhere.

    7. With nfh nearby - know your legal rights and exactly what land is yours - to stop them in their tracks any time they "try it on" (thankfully those days seem to be over.....but info. kept in case). Thankfully they've stopped "popping up in my garden" these days:) - but as well to have kept that info. anyway.

    8. Something I've rather belatedly come to after moving - but:
If daylight has dawned that it's actually quite a regular occurrence for people to ask personal questions they aren't entitled to ask/and that often turn out to have had a "hidden agenda" behind asking:silenced: = work out a list of suitable replies (so you're all ready for the next - inevitable time another bright spark asks That Question of you again). Complete with being ready to just literally walk off if the response doesn't stop the questioning. Sometimes one realises the "wrong" answer to a question (in their personal opinion) is going to result in a "would-be command" of "You should....."

    1) Don't ever put yourself in anybody's power. Yup.
    2) Don't take people at face value. Double yup.
    3) Always have a planB and a planC. And Plans D, E and down to Plan Z. If we get to Plan Z, the S has well and truly hit the F.
4)Never run out of [STRIKE]sweeties[/STRIKE] CHOCOLATE!
:)Pay cash for everything unless it's something like an appliance. It's a civil duty to be secretive.

Pretend to be a boring old f**t (not too hard in my case :p). Far better that people think you're a dullard - and so ignore you - than they know what you're really up to. One doesn't want to attract attention/ envy. Grey is the new rock & roll.

Have many months' worth of living expenses available in the emergency fund.

Live well below your means. The peace of mind thusly conferred is priceless.

Always carry enough cash to get you a hotel room/ cab fare/ emergency whatever it is.

Never buy new things until you've tried really hard and utterly failed to source them used. Every £ is a prisoner (my orginal MSE sigline btw).

Have many months' worth of shelf-stable grub.

Grow yer own, you know where it's been.

Assume TPTB are up to no good, you'll be pleasantly surprised if proved wrong. Unlikely to happen, but just about possible.

If using public transport, never aim to be on the last bus or train out, aim for the second-to-last so you have a fallback for the later option if the other one conks out.

Always be prepared to do something completely unexpected in an extreme situation. Looking daft, or looking like a dangerous lunatic is potentially useful.

Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I don't think I have any rules for living. Maybe I should have. However I have taken note of the one about always having a 'phone to hand. I hardly use my mobile so I tend to forget about it. But I should keep it with me.
I don't have a mortgage or rent or use a credit card so those don't apply. I use cash for everyday because I find it easier to keep track and I like to keep a hundred or so to hand. If I were to be a TSB customer I would keep more. While looking for an alternative bank...
I think it's great to be independent. I am independently minded because I have had to be. But also I need to learn to accept help more. I'm not getting any younger! I recently accepted help from a neighbour in cutting down some trees. That's a biggy for me. ;)

Always try to deal with any event/situation/breakage etc straight away, before it either gets worse in reality or in your mind.
Relax and try to enjoy each moment.
