There's a lady on a FB group I'm in who lives in a caravan, complete with woodburning stove. She parks it on farm land or friends large wooded garden. It does sound like an ideal way to live and the pics she posted are lovely and cosy. I think that would be a good way to live if things went to custard..
  • I'm a regular lurker on here but rarely post. However, when I do post and see other infrequent posters ask questions, regular posters have been welcoming and encouraging. I'm probably a failure at OS living but the advice has been invaluable and my only barrier to more frequent participation my own lack of knowledge to contribute.

The sense of friendship and camaraderie here is very clear. Thank you to those regulars who do offer their time, support and words of wisdom freely and publically. I've been more prepared than I would have been otherwise for ongoing health issues in the family and am therefore managing time more effectively when I really have very little to spare. Some practicalities may not apply to me (no wood burner or allotment here) but I am encouraged to think about the wider picture.
  • I had decided last night that I would stop using MSE old style altogether, I have taken down all of my posts here from yesterday as I hate the thought of being thought abusive by or to anyone and that another poster felt they were was the biggest factor in the decision to remove them. Reflection overnight has brought me to the decision that I will not leave this thread that I value and have good friends on because of a difference of approach and opinion from posters who don't normally post here. I hope we are not cliquey, I can see how we may come over as close because we've all gotten to know each other well over the years and become friends and friends do share a closeness that may make first time posters feel like they're breaking in to an established group. There is always room and a place for anyone who wants to start prepping, we all had to make that decision at some point in our lives and we all had a first post on this prepping thread. All are welcome, all points of view are valid and all ideas and skills are adding to the knowledge pool for each of us as they are given in posts here. I will be very careful in the future to use no words that may be considered abusive and if I have called any of you Petal or Sunshine in the past and you've felt abused please have a heartfelt apology from me as those are terms I use everyday, it's an endearment really, and I've not seen anyone of my acquaintance feel insulted by them in my 70 years of existence.

Morning all. Glad you've got your water back Fuds, well done to you jack DH!

I was looking back in my diary for last year and it was around this time we had no kitchen, bathroom, heating or hot water, just one toilet and a small sink. Luckily thanks to this thread, I had set up a mini kitchen etc.

Also bought lots of water yesterday. Now I know I should be filling large vats (?) with tap water, but I'm not very good at checking, so keeping in sealed bottles with long dates does it for me.

I also now keep some emergency cash in the house.

Long may this thread continue. BTW, I only use thanks to check where I've got up to, as I've a head like a sieve.

    Have a great day everyone.

Mrs LW, don't you dare to stop posting!

I speak as one who dips in and out of this thread and rarely posts. However, even though I don't always agree with people's opinions, (No one would unless they were a blancmange) I have never found anyone to be anything even close to abusive.
I do think that if everyone has to weigh up every word they say in case it finds someone who objects, we are on a very slippery slope to mediocrity.
I recently posted on another thread something that I have found very true.....
It appears that if you treat some people the way they treat you, they are offended.

I bet that I have offended someone in the past. Fortunately, as I could be a granny to most of you, I'm much to old to care. I don't think that anyone sits down to post thinking, "Now what can I say to upset folk today."

Let's have a little maturity and a sense of humour for goodness sake.

For what its worth, I think you are all wonderful. And sensible. And funny.
I believe that friends are quiet angels

We have one of those life straws for when we go camping. It sat in the box for months and then we went to the lake district and it was such a palava having to find a shop for water and the prices are a bit silly if you dont go to the bigger town's supermarkets so we used it with the lake water and it was really useful. They are small but can handle thousands of litres before the filter wears out
Would definitely recommend it for the emergency shelf.

I need to prep for some outside house maintenance this spring, fortunately no cracks in the lime render but I still have some lime render powder and bits from last time, just in case The repair I did two years ago is very good and blended well with the surrounding area. This year will see some algae removal and maybe some toch up paint if there are any fine cracks, although lime does heal small cracks

I won`t be shimmying up the long ladder to paint the balcony and posts that reach to the roof, did those 18 months ago, ladder tied at all times btw and I did a much better, more thorough job than the professional painter who did next door in one day. I took two full weeks and did two brush coats after sanding prep. That prepping ie weather prep, was invaluable and has protected my house timbers beautifully

I am still prepping for whatever might be the case for a potential house move, this prep involves getting rid of things and packing, unobtrusively, whatever I can do without for the interim ie lock n lock boxes at the moment. I cannot do much in the garage, my workbench stays put as does my scroll saw and bikes and the wood for carving

Back to my knitting, looks like a dull day ahead but I may take myself on a cycle ride. Re getting into my 70th year, was ok once the day was over, just another day older in reality

MrsL. you always get pillocks on forums, fact of life. Ignore ignore ignore lol- just like a toddler in a tantrum :D

haha I like and mrs LW, don`t leave, for goodness sake. Bullies cannot win and the thread and others cannot do without your many years of wisdom
  • Thanks MAR I have used the ignore facility many times in the past and am up to the high 60's in terms of folks whose posts I will not read, it's much more peaceful that way and less likely to promote a response from me that I'll feel uneasy about later on.

I did not see anything offensive in your posts Mrs L, nor have I ever. I bet blindman is on the ignore list of many of us now.

BTW, remember the DUP politician who was in the BBC clip talking about that power station being closed? I emailed him about my conspiracy concerns last night. It will be interesting to see if I get any reply given my jaundiced view of politicians.
