Churchmouse - I see no problem with “quiet” fireworks, if we could do away with the bangs and just have the pretty colours then that would be ideal. Is it possible to do what Mojisola suggests and take your lad to see a public display in a sheltered, controlled environment? Alternatively I remember as a kid we had indoor fireworks one year, do they still sell them?
I hadn’t thought of the connection between fireworks noise and terrorism incidents before, that to me says it is even more important to restrict the sale of fireworks. One life - your life - live it!0 -
As well as pets being afraid of the bangs, I wonder if anyone has considered ex-servicemen who have shattered nerves from Iraq/Afghanistan. I bet there's a fair few of them who hate this time of year, also.0

That's a good point jk0 - I imagine it must be terrifying for some of them
I remember we went to a public display when our children were 12, 10 and 2. We parked a fair way off but had a good view, but they had a lot of very loud bangers. The 2-year-old didn't like it at all, so OH distracted him by feeding him foam shrimps from a bag he (OH) had in his pocket. OH had been looking forward to eating those.....Anyway, the bangs were so loud that they were setting all the car alarms off. Ridiculous. The following year it was back to "pretty" ones in our garden0 -
It dawned on me this morning that when I see Mr. Trump Sir on the TV giving a speech or being aggressively abusive over someone or something that has been said I see him as a cross between Toad of Toad Hall in his yellow motor car, the Cheshire cat and a Pantomime Dame. I feel this is NOT a good image for the leader of a large nation!0

Major store cupboard changes here. I've decided to run down the stock of ready made soups, tinned meats and sauces for dried produce that can be assembled to make that product. I will still buy beans in tins (raw not baked) tinned fish, mainly tuna and tinned tomatoes but I think that will be all.
My aim is for low salt stores. My tinned cupboard is full of salted items.
If anyone can learn anything from me, a food hoarder, please don't put all your eggs in one basket because you don't know what allergy, intolerance or health problem that will come along in the future. If I ever need to rely on my own stocks as it stands I will be shoving salt down my neck at a rate of knots.
If there's anything that comes to mind that will help me with the shift it would be very much appreciated. I'm concentrating on dried veg, fruit, pulses while adding to tinned tomatoes. I'm stocking up on tinned tuna but don't know what other protein would be low in salt.
For years I've been ignorant to my salt intake. A little knowledge has me feeling really quite foolish about that. :cool:0 -
Just more on Donald Trump, there have been psychiatrists questioning his mental health. We live in bizarre times. I suppose the one good thing you can say about this is that in some other countries you would get incarcerated or worse for raising such a thing.
This should be a good read. :rotfl:
'More than two dozen psychiatrists and psychologists offer their consensus view that Trump's mental state presents a clear and present danger to our nation and individual well-being'.

As an ex mental health bod, I do wonder whether he at least has a personality disorder.0 -
Does anyone remember the Wogan firework display?
I can recall the happy oooh-ing & aahh-ing along to one which had a particularly charming shade of beige.
I appreciate those on one end of the autistic spectrum may not get it, but others may find it uproarious. PTSD suffering squaddies, too. Well worth a few minutes with the thesaurus & the paint samples, pet friendly & wickedly MS.
Trump isn't just getting it from one person - here's the transcript of Senator Flake's speech. (Such an unfortunate name, but darn, what a speech!) Have to say Flake & Corker sound an end of the pier show, which is unfortunate since the Amazing Stupendo is undoubtedly the chap currently touring the Oval Office.0 -

If you're looking at the dried beans you can get in supermarkets - remember that the timings can be as much as an hour different for different types. Boiling beforehand is nearly always necessary for dried beans, I think it's the saponins in the top layer? It's not just kidney beans.
Lentils are great - they'll take the flavour of anything you put with them, they don't need long soaking, and they cook in a shorter time. Plus, lentils and rice give the same protein value as steak, so I've heard (is that a rumour? I dunno, sorry).
Dried peas don't need boiling either, though they do need soaking. If there's anything that comes to mind that will help me with the shift it would be very much appreciated. Sounds like you're really going through it with the salt issues - have you tried lo-salt and its supermarket own brand equivalents.

I think God/fate is having a little laugh at our expense when we find we are allergic to something we have loads of. I just sadly threw away a lot of beefburgers and sausages that I can no longer eat due to gallstones. (They were well past the date where anyone would want them.)0
