I know there are cases of plague every year in some parts of the world. I know that plague isn't likely to spread here. I was just saying how odd it is that we now have an outbreak of penumonic plague -aka the BD- ongoing in the 21 st century!0

Diseases spread in crowded environments. The larger the global population, the closer we're crammed together, the more diseases we will get to enjoy and with a greater frequency.
There's a separate issue that expanding populations spread out into areas that were previously unpopulated or scantly populated, encountering diseases borne by animals which are transmissable to ourselves.
Lyme Disease is now endemic in several parts of the UK. The vector are ticks, their usual host deer, the consequences for a human bitten by an infected tick can be a lifetime of debilitating illness.
The dreadful ebola emerged as a disease of humans due to people expanding into jungly areas (usual vector, bats). Other species act as incubators and mutators of the flu virus; the wild bird-domestic pig-human route of transmission of influenza is well-understood by science.
Understood doesn't mean sorted, btw. It just means a lot of boffins in labs having nightmares.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

It's the bangers that I would like to see limited, I have no objection to the purely 'pretty' fireworks in, fact I love those and enjoy it very much when folks nearby have them for the smaller children in their back gardens. When we had dear old Docky the letting off of very loud bangers started most years some 6 weeks before Bonfire Night and usually went through beyond New Year and he was TERRIFIED throughout the whole period, as the daylight faded he'd be looking up at the window, pacing, panting, shivering and as full dark came he'd be in the hall by the front door or in the kitchen back door and at the first BANG he'd start trying to dig his way out and that would go on until it was daylight the next morning. If I had £1 for every time one or the other of us had to spend the night downstairs trying to keep him from hurting himself or damaging the house I'd be considerably better off than I am today. We took it in turns to sleep or be down with the poor out of his head scared boy and IT WASN'T FAIR to any of us. I don't see that loud explosions add any pleasure to the spectacle of fireworks!0

I think most people who buy noisy fireworks nowadays have the same sort of f*** you mentality as the people who drive round with car stereos or exhausts that rattle your windows, don't they? They do it because TPTB let them get away with it.0

Churchmouse, yes, thats the kind of firework display I grew up with (in the 60s), and at first we even had to stay indoors for that. Hope your grandson can enjoy the coming season.
Totally agree with everyone about the bangs - and its an idea, isn't it, about terrorist attacks and "I thought it was fireworks" - I don't see that becoming a legislative issue any time soon, but its a thought.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

Enjoy, yes. Need, no.
We couldn't cope with large crowds and the standing around because of health reasons so we found somewhere to park so the we could see the bulk of the display without all the upsetting stuff.
You sometimes have to be imaginative to get round problems and other times you just have to accept that health problems mean you can't do some things.0 -
Just breaking...a bit of a hornets nest is happening in the USA as Senior Senator Bob Corker has spoken out against Mr. Trump Sir and called him a liar and said he's not up to the job, is debasing the United States by his every action and word. He says that the world doesn't believe a word that Mr. Trump Sir says and that everyone sees through his bullying, says he is devolving! Ouch!!!
When asked by the interviewer Senator Corker also said he had doubts as to the stability of Mr.T Sir and that included about his access to nuclear weapons!0 -
I heard of him recently, because of his low opinion of Trump. Sounds like things are hotting up again ...2023: the year I get to buy a car0
