It makes sense. The pyloric sphincter, which is the muscle which controls emptying of the stomach into the duodenum, is acid sensitive and it only relaxes when the acidity of the stomach is correct. If the stomach contents aren't acid enough, the sphincter won't open but the stomach compresses to try to empty itself and that can force the contents back up into the oesophagus.

and what causes low stomach acid? It's said to be the fight and flight response over rest and digest response. Stress! I've been living being chewed up for the past 8 years. My nervous system has had me living in flight or flight for so long. It's no wonder really but I'm taking the meds because I need a helping hand right now. A quick fix if you like while I sort myself and my other blummin' organs heal.

money may I ask if ever you took omeprezole or the like for your acid reflux? I would love to beat this myself.

No - I haven't ever taken any drugs for it. I'm very anti taking any drugs at all that I can possibly help and will always look to more natural remedies personally if there is a health problem.

I really don't want to go down the road of taking any drug even halfway regularly. Literally the only drug I've taken for more than a few days/few times ever in my life was the Pill (well - there wasnt any option but to have that - until I got sterilised - so I could stop taking it).

What I would do and found it helped was that I would occasionally have a glass of warm water with teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda/level teaspoon of sugar (to detract from the taste of it) and a good squeeze of lemon juice and that would often help. But I wasnt that happy at getting to that stage or of having either bicarb. or sugar (as I avoid sugar even).

EDIT; I do think stress is a contributory factor myself. Prior to moving here I'd had it occasionally for a while. After moving here - I was getting it very frequently. Now it is a bit of a "Which came first - the chicken or the egg?" question here. But there were a variety of problems I was having to tackle/worse weather than I'm used to/renovating the house (and all the problems I had with that) and "neighbours from hell" trying to intimidate me to do what they wanted (or, preferably, move back again). So my own home was not a restful place to be - between the work on it and the neighbours. The house itself is now finished. The neighbours basically "cut it out" and have (in the main) stopped playing silly b&ggers after the first couple of years (ie I suppose when it became plain I was staying regardless of what they were doing). The stress of all this did mean I was having more booze than I was happy with - to try and forget about it all. The "chicken and egg" question was which was causing my health to be so much worse - the extra consolatory wine or the neighbours directly. It's still not quite clear exactly in my mind - but that period is over now thank goodness and I can focus more on getting with my life as I intended to from the outset - and the stress has lessened a LOT.

    :) Morning all.

Funny co-incidence; two days ago, I was advised to add some salt into my diet, as I don't get it from processed food, don't add it during cooking or to plated food and have low BP/ slow heartbeat (thus no contra-indications to using salt).

I must admit, it feels a bit dodgy using the salt cellar again. Next time I'm in the health food shop, I'm going to get some of that pink Himalayan rock salt to try, since sea salt is all supposed to be full of micro-plastics these days.

Fuddle, have you considered rinsing salted beans/ veggies after taking them from the can and before heating/ cooking? This should reduce the salt content considerably. Just a thought. You will probably find the eventual weight loss eases the reflux, good luck with it all.

:D I could go to my TK Maxx and see if they have it - never thought to look there, thanks for the tip.

I like the health food shop but it is a bit above my pocket, a 200g pkt of brazil nuts being £4 more than at Tosspots. I know they haven't got the economies of scale of T's but that's a helluva difference, isn't it?!

Fuddle, I used to suffer fron acid reflux at night. It stopped when I made my main meal lunch and stopped eating anything at all after 5pm. This doesn't fit in with the modern pattern of meals so can be awkward at times but it works for me.

  • Yes I understand this is caused by too little acid in the stomach which comes, like lots of things, with the passage of time. I have two tablespoons of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar with the juice of half a lemon and a pinch of cayenne diluted in a little water about half an hour before my main meal. It can take the enamel off your teeth so best drunk through a straw. It is vile but apparently makes for much better nutrient and vitamin absorption in the stomach.
