I have ferrets, two hobs. (Not something I'd normally say in polite company) And a Border terrier who is, despite his 'cute' appearance is a brilliant ratter.
We had a real problem with mice and rats around the henpen on the allotment when we first took it on, so dad brought his ferrets over from Lincolnshire. Sorted. And we went on from there. 38 years ( not the age of my ferrets) and many dead rats later, I'm convinced that they are still the best weapon where vermin are concerned.
My old lads are pensioners now, but if you know anyone with ferrets it would be worth trying; although many won't let their animals hunt rats because rat bites can be very nasty indeed.0 -

Wow! And when I think of the big deal I'm making to myself of processing the wild garlic I'm growing
I love that sort of photojournalism - tells the story like nothing else. Thanks Mar.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Interesting article. Did wonder how long it would take me to process a black bear. A lot longer than one day I suspect :rotfl:
Was surprised they still needed £9,600 a year to live on though. £800 a month. Land taxes maybe? Love that pantry though.0 -
That's really interesting! Thanks, mar. Rather them than me though! I'd love the peace and quiet, as it gets quite noisy here - especially atm with the building work over the road - but I wouldn't like to be quite as isolated as that.0

That's an awful lot of tinned food.Think I might be longing for fresh fruit and veg after a few weeks.
Has anyone read Dana Stabenow's novels-they are set in one of the Alaskan national parks.0 -
Great article. I expect they have to have money for things like gasoline for the machines, any kind of medicines, material for clothes or just clothes, iron or steel tools, ammo ..etc, anything that would be really difficult to make themselves. We sometimes watch a thing called 'below zero' which has people living up there as a feature. Fairbanks is often mentioned as the nearest town.0

I thought it was an awful lot of money as well cappella. I quite wanted to live in Alaska since reading the Call of the Wild and the poems of Robert Service but I don't think they are being fair to the son - he will struggle to ever live a normal life.0

mar Yes, I did feel very sorry for the son0

I agree mardatha and ivyleaf He's going to find social situations very, very difficult. Was a little surprised by the choice of video game too - it's pretty violent as far as I recall (could be wrong though, it's many years since my children played video games)?
Anyway, I'm feeling no urge to move to Alaska at all. Truthfully I never have wished to - just the thought of the deer flies and mosquitos in the summer makes me itchSuspect I'm a pretty lightweight prepper!!
