I'm off to Berlin with gf for a couple of days this month.

I have notified my debit and credit card providers where I'll be going, but their reply does not fill me with confidence:
Thank you for your message dated 05-Apr-2017.

We have recorded the details of where and when you are travelling and have updated our records, in line with your request. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a safe journey.

Our debit and credit cards are accepted internationally, so you should have no problems using them abroad. However, we do occasionally require our customers to answer security questions when a transaction is being authorised as extra protection against fraudulent usage on their cards. To do this, we send a message to the retailer to request that they call their authorisation centre. The retailer should then contact their authorisation centre to approve the transaction. Regrettably, there are instances where these procedures are not always followed and customers are sometimes advised that the transaction has been declined.

If your card is declined, please contact us immediately on the International telephone number so the matter can be resolved swiftly.

Once a security check has been triggered, any attempt to make purchases or cash withdrawals will be declined. To minimise the impact this may have on you, we suggest if possible, that you take other forms of payment and more than one credit or debit card.

Well that's not very helpful is it?

I have some old travellers cheques. Are they still acceptable?

:( Agree about the judge, Nargleblast.

If a form of assault would be unacceptable if targetted on a passing stranger out on the street, it ought to be even more unacceptable if inflicted on a member of the family. And since when has the career advancement of criminals had to be considered as a factor in the mitigation of their sentencing? If you don't wanna do time, don't do crime.

Re the current affairs, I'd rather they weren't happening, but scarier things have happened before and nothing much came of it - eg the Cuban Missile Crisis, among others.

As preppers, we need to keep our heads and try to look behind the narratives we're being fed by both mainstream and alt media. The truth is probably known to only a double-handful of influential people, and they aren't about to tell us. If we live long enough, diligent historians may tease out some of the facts over the next 40 years or so, but many things are always going to be unknowable, now and in the future.

Lovely peeps, always always question what you're told. Ask why you're being told this at all and why you're being told this now, and who is doing the telling and whose pockets are they in.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

  • and whose pockets are they lining and whose interests are they advancing at the expense of the rest of the world? call me a cynic but I just have the feeling that the feudal system isn't entirely gone and we'll all end up as vassals and serfs again, belonging to a master to whom we'll be an expendable commodity!

:) Ahh, just recalling a situation I was in about ten years ago when I used to get my newspapers (Guardian and Observer) as cast-offs from a friend's household.

The Guardian would be anything from 3-5 days old when I got it, and the Observer approx one week old.

Now, bearing in mind that these are highly-reputable if lefty newspapers, not rabble-rousing red top tabloids appealing to the basest human emotions, what do you think became very noticable once the news had had a few days to be superceded by more news?

Yup, that many of the things printed in them, particularly about dramatic global events, were wholly or substantially WRONG with only a few days' seasoning and hindsight. So wrong that one could have usefully forgone the initial reading and been the better off for it.

Given that events move constantly, yet media outlets feel obligated to put content up by the minute, it's inevitable that much of what we read is going to be garbage, no matter how sincere and well-meaning its originators.

I also note that in the circumstances where my humble little life, and that of my associates, has interacted with newsworthy events, the reporting of same was very poor. Even to the point of getting names wrong and inarguable facts wrong, not subjective matters of opinion.

ETA; Lyn, we never ceased to be vassals and serfs, we just have the illusion of freedom. We're tax donkeys and our duty to our masters is to keep them f*rting thru silk.

D'you think there will be a world salt shortage? they'll need an awful lot of salt if we all start to take media information with a pinch every time it's put out there!

Some wonderful Sabre Rattling going on from the Russians according to the newsfeed this morning and the allegation from Mr. Trump that Mr Putin may have used the 'N' word in his response to the missile strike by the USA on the Syrian air base.

I so don't prep salt and in all I have read this morning it's that very fact that has me wobbling as a prepper! :D I'm on to it ;)

Morning ladies and everyone to follow. I hope the sun is shining upon your mug this morning.

Continuing a chain of thought about wartime sausagemeat, and cynicism, my guess would be those sausages contained whichever noble steeds fell badly at any fence.

Anyone got as much as even half a carrot on the National? 5.15 this afternoon, one of my few treats, hoping any of my sweepstake names survives to finish! Mind, years ago I bought a Playmobil horse with my winnings on Dubacilla (came in 4th - I was stunned, not realising 4th counted as a Place!).

Not forgotten colleague grousing about her sister & racing - sis "could be there all day & not buy a single drink!" (in her low cut frock). The only polite consolation was she'd have to pay her own cab fare home. Is having (with intent) a low cut top, prepping, money saving, or just a bit of fun in an otherwise slightly moralistic world?

I've got a socking great box of Saxo for winter path safety, but it's food grade so much is possible. (I was tempted in Costco & thought why not? Then had to lift it & realised part of the answer!)
