Awful news from Nice. It's almost unimaginable. And all sorts of horrible pictures on social media which I inadvertently came across.

I suppose there are nonetheless signs of basic human decency e.g. free taxis to get people home and the Portes Ouvertes hashtag.

Ignoring immigration issues I was displeased the bbc posted this short on how easy it is to get on a plane and to london on a fake passport.

the first time the guy was caught he was back on a different plane at the same airport the next day on a different passport. ridiculous.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Not good news to wake up to.

Quick google - nicer city/345,000 people/in other words our equivalent would be Brighton probably. The shock factor being it's somewhere one wouldnt expect an attack basically - not London, Birmingham, etc type cities - where you know (and deplore) that they are at risk:(

Those poor people. My sympathies lie with them.

    Another vote for Kelly Kettles.

Used mine at Glastonbury to provide tea, porridge and washing water (you really can wash in the tiniest amount of water).

A couple of people stopped and asked how it worked, what it was and where to get one. I started mine off with solid fuel blocks there as the environment was a little challenging. And used the tuna tin heater (tuna tin, packed with cardboard (coiled tightly inside) and melted candle wax poured over).

Shocking news from Nice, terror really is the right word isn't it? :(

I've watched since it happened and it's up to 84 killed. It seemed every time I glanced up the death toll kept rising. My heart goes out to the families of the dead and wounded.

VJsmum I had never heard of a tuna tin heater. Thanks for describing it and how it can work with the Kelly kettle. Great information!
Overprepare, then go with the flow.

:( Such a sad day for those poor people in Nice. Hard to comprehend the wickedness of someone who would deliberately mow down a crowd.

re the tuna can heaters, you use corrugated cardboard cut into strips and coiled tightly in the can, with candlewax poured over to soak in. Makes an excellent resource and is fast and easy to create at home using waste materials. I have three stashed in my preps in case I need to use the kelly kettle outside on the concrete in a hurry and don't want to forage for twigs.

I also have a bag of pine cones, well dried out, saved for the same purpose. You can even enhance the burnability of these by dipping in molten wax.

One thing I have considered is that if I was using candles for several hours in a power outage, those smelly waxes could get headachey very quickly, so if I'm buying candles, I opt for the plain ones.

Also, some candles are rated to burn 100 hours or more, and these take up no more space than other pillar candles, but makes prepping in a confined space as you get more bang for your buck.

LOL my glasto can had mixed scented candle wax :rotfl: but luckily was outside.

It masked the smell of the loos for a while :rotfl:

(only kidding, the loos only smell if you're right by them..)
