I will NEVER have a smart/dumb meter fitted in my property! They use frequencies which are harmful to human health and there is far too much use of these frequencies already without adding to it. Many people go along with it without considering the possible consequences. It's like mobile phones which I will also not use.

Its your choice, you better start checking out solar panels and windmills for your electricity demands if you are going to be so strong minded about a smart meter. I hope you have binned your laptop and wifi on which you tapped out this rubbish from Stopsmartmeters. I don t want people like you influencing the decisions to make smart meters compulsory. They will be at the forefront I suppose in the opposition to compulsory smart meters. Just like the opposition to fracking we have to have a little bunch of fanatics who make a big noise trying to get their own way.
I ve been a member of Stopsmartmeters just to get their views and their founder Dr Elizabeth Evans makes the dubious claim that she comes out in a cold sweat just being in the area of a humble little smart meter emitting tiny amounts of radio waves. I wonder how she fares when her numerous colleagues use their iPhones in her vicinity ?

Sorry Malc but I cannot resist. There is a £11.6Bn cost to consumers for these meters. The Data Communications Company goes live in mid August. Is E.oN now rolling out SMETS2 meters or old SMETS1 stock?

Although to be fair, that cost will be spread over everyone - whether they have a smart meter or not. A slower roll out might have reduced the costs - still might if the 2020 deadline gets moved.

So for each individual customer there is no charge if they choose to change to a smart meter.

re the original post -I had such a missive from EON early this year - one thing that disturbed me at the time, was that the letter spoke of my meters coming to the end of useful life -the leccy meter was only 12 months old!!!
I just ignored the request to make an appointment -I'll wait for the upgraded Smart meters!

    Morning Hengus.

Totally understand where you're coming from on the costs. My advice to Daz, though, was from a purely customer service angle. Individual customers aren't charged a separate fee when we fit Smart Meters.

To be honest, I'm not sure where we're at regarding SMET1 and SMET2 so I've asked the question further up the food chain. I'll let you know more when I've had an answer.

    Thanks.

Thank you. Given that we are at a crossroads with the DCC going live next month, would it not be reasonable for suppliers to tell their customers whether:

    a. They are getting a SMETS 1 meter that is not capable of being upgraded and will require replacement in 2018.

    b. They are getting a SMETS1 meter that is capable of being upgraded to SMETS2 by mid 2018.

    c. The meter being provided is SMETS2 and thus able to retain communications connectivity with the DCC irrespective of the chosen supplier.

Your smart meter team must have this information to hand. The more information that can be provided, the more informed choice a customer can make.

Yes, that's right SwanJon. We don't charge individual customers a separate fee when we fit a Smart Meter.

So what do you do about the people who live each side of you who have mobile phones, smart meters, wifi, bluetooth, wireless DECTphones etc.

How to you get away with sitting on a train, bus or any other public place where people are using wifi or mobile phones all around you.

I trust you go out wearing tinfoil underwear and a silly tinfoil hat on your head to protect yourself from all this radiation.

It's just as mad as all the daft B's who wanted lead tabards etc when they were asked to sit in front of a computer not realising that they'd been sitting in front of a telly every night of the week.

Do you still believe that the earth is flat and that the whole universe revolves around it??

As above brewerdave, no need to have a Smart Meter if you don't want one.

We're contacting a lot of customers to let them know about the Smart Meter rollout. The letters, emails etc we send are fairly general and go to customers with various types and ages of metering set up. I suspect the letter you received was along these lines.

At the moment, not all customers can have Smart Meters. It depends on things like the area, type of property, strength of the mobile phone signal and the current metering set up. We don't contact customers where it's obvious we can't fit one. There are times, though, when we'll be in touch but have to abort a job when a survey throws up a particular problem.

    Hope this explains brewerdave.

All good points Hengus. Individual conversations are held between our Smart specialists and customers so we can go through all the relevant points. This includes letting them know what will happen if they change supplier. As I said to brewerdave above, circumstances vary so much that we need to look at each job individually and advise the customer accordingly. The customer can decide against going Smart at any time.

There's a lot of work going on behind the scenes to iron out these limitations so all customers can be offered a Smart Meter. The DCC you mention is a step towards this.

Hope this is of interest Hengus.
