EON want me to have smart meters
Got an email from EON today saying my current meters are being phased out and they want to replace them with smart meters.
Looking at their website it says this....
"If you change supplier, you may lose some of the benefits of having an E.ON smart meter. Your smart meter and Smart Energy Display will still be able to communicate with each other to show you how much energy you’re using, but it’ll show your E.ON prices and not the fuel prices from your new supplier. "
That last bit concerns me as I change suppliers on an almost yearly basis.
Can I refuse the new meters ?

Yes. All meters from Summer 2018 should be SMETS2 compliant which will allow switching without the loss of smart meter connectivity. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Hello Daz2009
Yes, you can refuse a Smart Meter. There's no legal obligation on customers to have one.
The message on our website you mention refers mainly to earlier models fitted during the Foundation stage of the Smart Meter rollout. Customers with these, or any type of Smart Meter, can still change supplier as now. It's just that the meters may lose certain smart functions.
At the moment, E.ON customers with Smart Meters could see changes to how the meter and display work when moving between different suppliers. It's likely their meters will revert to a traditional or dumb type. They may need to be read manually as they won't be able to send us readings remotely. Also, the Energy Display that comes with the meters will no longer show usage in pounds and pence although they'll continue to give this in kWh.
This is only temporary until all suppliers use a centralised database through the Data Communications Company (DCC) to look after the Smart network. The DCC will pass meter readings to the current supplier. It's hoped this will be in place later this year.
As Hengus says, the aim is for customers to be able to switch supplier without losing Smart capability. The central database I mentioned will help as will the newer models of meter we're fitting now.
Hope this explains Daz2009. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

Don't even think of them as being 'smart' meters, in the long run they simply record the amount of fuel used, that is their main purpose, anything else is a bonus for the company.
It will not cost you a penny either way.0 -
Thanks for the info Malc.
I'll hold fire in that case0 -
Sorry Daz2009 should've mentioned, as Wizard of Id says, there's no charge for either the Smart Meter or Energy Display.

Sorry Malc but I cannot resist. There is a £11.6Bn cost to consumers for these meters. The Data Communications Company goes live in mid August. Is E.oN now rolling out SMETS2 meters or old SMETS1 stock? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Consumers are losing much more overall with the use of ordinary meters. We all heard the head of BG Revenue Protection Unit on a program a few years ago where the BBC followed the RPU men on their rounds catching the vast number of thieves and fraudsters at work helping themselves to free energy. He stated that we were all paying approx £60 a year extra to cover the amount of loss from theft alone.Double that cost again to at least £120 a year if you bring in the losses to professional renters fiddling energy. A senior BG RPU man has told me that losses from the professional renters is greater than the loss from theft. With all the money lost to debtors and professional renters and add a lot more unknown losses and arguments and complaints over billing costs, warrants and locksmiths for prepayment meter fitting its obvious that smart metering will lower all the huge losses to these and lower all consumers bills in the process .
Its totally ludicrous to stay with these relic meters. I believe when there is a revue of giving Joe Public the option to refuse a smart meter the UK will join the rest of Europe ( Germans and Swedes excepted ) and make them compulsory. Joe Public does not understand the background to smart meters, he just thinks like a typical little Englander in his castle, so his views should not be taken into consideration and the greater good should over rule small complaints of no consequence.0 -

I think most of us "Little Englanders" don't care a bit as we know full well that if every house magically had smart meters tomorrow that our bills won't drop by ANY amount.0 -

Welcome back ! yes they will drop.smart prepayment meters used a lot in Northern Ireland by Budget Energy offer the cheapest electric prepayment meter tariff in the UK because the meters cost less to run. Its only the start in the economics of smart meters, it can only get better.
Another point is that so far I hav`ent found one smart meter involved in bypassing in all the years that BG have been installing them, about 8 years now.0 -
I will NEVER have a smart/dumb meter fitted in my property! They use frequencies which are harmful to human health and there is far too much use of these frequencies already without adding to it. Many people go along with it without considering the possible consequences. It's like mobile phones which I will also not use.
