New fridge freezer - £30 to collect old one :-(

Had our american style fridge freezer for over 15 years now. Its started developing an intermittent fault where the freezer goes off. Yesterday went off overnight then came back on. Not the first time its done this.
£175 for a repair seems a bit much. Intermittent problems I dont like either. So far the freezer hasn't shut off long enough to ruin all the food. (If it does, with £100 insurance excess its not going to be worth claiming).
Also, working away a lot I dont want leave dear wife with a defrosting freezer and water dripping all over the place whilst trying to look after the kids.
So, £800 for a new one seemed sensible. (Noticed its A+ energy rating so, never know, might save some electric too!). A lot I suppose but best part of £200 for repairs to a 15 year old fridge seemed silly.
BUT, £30 to take old one away :-( What do they do with them? Do they get scrapped or refurbished? Be a bit off for me to pay to take something away that then gets resold.
Normally, for something like this, I'd sell it on ebay or something for someone to repair but a huge fridge like this is not really practical......

They have to dispose of it correctly due to the coolant fluid etc. And given the size of an american fridge freezer, I'd be happy to pay that- my sister almost slipped a disc trying to move hers!
You've had it 15 years, that's just £2 per year.0 -
Some company remove old one for free when you order new from them.

Yes I suppose if they dispose of it rather than resell. I just dont like binning something that might be of use to someone.0 -

I'm sure someone would take it on freecycle0

What use is a fridge/freezer that switches itself on and off? I have a watch that you may sell as well. It stops every 10 mins and starts again 5 mins later!. The OP should contact his council for removal of bulky items. As i speak there is one lying outside my door awaiting collection for nowT!"if the state cannot find within itself a place for those who peacefully refuse to worship at its temples, then it’s the state that’s become extreme".Revd Dr Giles Fraser on Radio 4 20170

Dont see what the problem is myself.
Someone came and collected your old fridge, that would involve a vehicle, petrol/diesel, insurance, ved. Then theres the employee who requires a wage, pensions, holidays, nic's, sick pay and parental leave. Then theres the business that employs the staff (cant be bothered going through all those expenses) but you get the idea.
You wanted rid of it they offered to take it away if you give them £30. Ok im fairly sure someone wouldve paid (even if it was few £) you for it but you didnt choose that option. You choose to pay someone to take it away.0 -

Id rather do that to be honest - thats the point. But its not really practical. Its a double size so we're talking almost 2m high and 90cm across. Massive thing that weighs a ton.
I've nowhere to keep it (and cant shift it on my own anyway). Also, it wouldnt even fit in a large 7 seater car - you'd need a van and a two person lift to get it.
In my experience, I've sold stuff before and said you need a big car and a few people to carry it and a young girl will show up in a fiesta lol.0 -

For someone who knows what they're doing it might be easily fixable. Who knows. Thats my point seems a shame paying £30 for someone to scrap something that could be fixed.
Pretty sure my local council will charge about the same to collect that.0 -
Some councils collect white goods free - providing your a Pensioner and produce your Birth Certificate and State Pension Book + Proof of residency, a utility Bill or equivalent.
If your a Pensioner, check your Council Website for details:beer:0
