As long as they are brushed regularly (once or twice a week for my standard coat dogs) they just blow their coats a couple of times a year where I constantly have to vacuum and pull tufts out of them, they really don't shed that much. My in laws lab moults more, so did a lab cross I once fostered, the fur is shorter but a lot more of it seems to come out.

The worst I've seen for shedding are huskies, malamutes and a Saint Bernard, there may be worse ones but they are the worst I've personally come across.

I stayed with a friend once who has three malamutes and they were going through a moult at the time, she brushed them just before bed, vacuumed and swept all around and when we got up in the morning the dogs room looked like it had a blanket of snow, I couldn't believe just how much had come off them in one night.

    Oh my word!!

I suppose I have yet to see how much a Newf sheds, as our last was part lab and so his fur wasn't quite as thick and fluffy as a Newf, although he had a mega thick undercoat....

I tended to keep on top of the brushing myself and sent him to the groomers twice a year for a full going over :) I'm hoping to keep to a similar regime for our new girl.

I have a Newfoundland pup. She is 16 weeks old and is absolutely amazing.

Erm, have you not seen the LAW stating that at the mention of a puppy you are required to post a photo? Either that or I'll be round after work for a cuddle. The pup not you, just to be clear:p:D

Can vouch personally for the huskies and malamutes. Every day I brush mine and when it's shedding season I'll fill a black sack everyday with fur. They lose their entire coat minimum twice a year but it's pretty much all year :rotfl:

I have a 1 year old Lhasa apso. I never wanted a dog, didn't even like dogs and was scared of them. A friend's dog had a litter and my OH and step daughter begged for one. Now she is the love of my life and wouldn't be without her.

My Mum is the same with my Shih Tzu .

Hates dogs (well in fairness has a bit of a phobia with animals). She now plays ball with her, chats away to her & the other day Rosie stood on her back legs and put her front paws on Mum's legs , looking at her & Mum said "Hello Rosie, have you come to see me? Where's your ball?"

Mum didn't even flinch! Huge progress & Mum is 85 , so that little girl has done well to win her over

  • Late to the party but just wanted to add my info. We wanted to get a dog. We were looking at rescues and trying to work our way around what to do when we went and stayed at my father in laws local pub for his wedding. We fell instantly and totally in love with a half collie half worker cocker. I've known many a worker cocker spaniel in my time and the mum of these pups was a stunner. Both in looks and personality. Penny is now ours and we are SO happy. we were prepared for a nightmare but so far (shes 4 months old) she has been far better behaved than my DH. Unusually, I was after more of a lab type breed but I am so super happy I chose her.

  • Nice thread!
  • I'm another not breed specific, i just love animals of all kinds.
Dog wise i've owned Dals, Cocker, German Shepherd (a much misunderstood breed) and currently a Labradoodle (yes i know its a mutt for those about to chip in) and 2 Staffys (another even greater misunderstood breed).
So quite often chaos in our house with the 3 of them, but i wouldnt change it for a single second.

If it walks like a Duck, quacks like a Duck, it's a Duck.
  • I'm an animal lover. 2 dogs (Irish blue staffie & cocker spaniel), 2 cats (14 year old man & 7 week old rescued kitten) and a bearded dragon. Always had a soft spot for staffies. Huskies have got to be next in line for me but wouldn't be able to cope with the fur everywhere
