What's your breed, and why?

Dogs, cats, rabbits, whatever. For those that stick to a particular breed, how did you choose it and why do you stick with it?

I'm a bull terrier woman. The first one was an accident as someone told my mother they had a terrier that needed a home. She was thinking little cute thing then a pig ugly obstinate clown arrived on the doorstep. She spent the first week petrified of it, then realised the "devil dog" exterior hid a heart of gold.
Me, I've stuck with the breed because they make me laugh when I'm not wanting to kill them. They're either asleep on your lap or causing havoc. I like a dog I can pat without breaking it. And i like the look of them, and that they stand out when you're walking them. And most of all I like a challenge.
The current incumbent, Gitdog is an EBT cross. Unwanted because he was a cross. And because he was a complete !!!!!. But he has the looks, and the temperament so I reckon he still counts.

So what's yours?

A certain breed of person used to go for that particular breed of dog, in a big way,

I have a Border Terrier as we had one when I was younger and he was a great little dog. My son chose to have a Border 8 years ago, I wanted a French bulldog but being the lovely Mum I am I let him choose. I think EBT's are very handsome :)

I love a lot of breeds but can't imagine not having at least one German Shepherd, I grew up with them around and will always have a place in my heart and home for them.

Through fostering I've developed a love of bull breeds, they are just such sweet, goofy, clumsy, comedic, playful and loving dogs. I will either end up with another GSD next time or a bull breed, most likely American bulldog or American bulldog cross.

I love Bengal cats. I love their crazy affectionate temperament and they are very beautiful to look at too.

Cocker Spaniel as I loved Lady and the Tramp. When she died of a heart attack I moved to a upstairs flat so not fair to get a dog.

Looked round for a cat which was a near a dog as possible, so Burmese. My first boy was a year old and neutered, returned to breeder and I got him for free. Sherpa lived 10 years before getting liver cancer, Cleopatra 14 years. Now Zanzi 17 and Delilah 12 both still alive and kicking.

I was dog mad as a kid but the family either were allergic to them or actively disliked them, so when I finally got a dog at age 23 I was overjoyed. She happened to be a little rescue Lurcher (whippet cross), and I've not been without a Lurcher since.
I've had lots of other breeds and crossbreeds over the years, all dearly loved, but whippety lurchers are just a bit special to me.

I've only ever had moggy cats and unless I fall for a sob story that goes with a breed cat, I always will.

So I guess 'my breed ' is Rescue!
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

Cats are normally doll face persians, although our cat at the moment is a ragdoll.

Dogs are either bulldogs or staffies.

I realised some years ago that all the rescue dogs I'd had conformed to a particular type- short haired, tri coloured if possible and houndy shape. I have now found my wonder breed: Lakeland trailhounds. If you don't know them they are scent hounds and race over the Cumbrian fells- lovely natures and like being cuddle monsters.

Look here to read about the breed - dogs need new homes every year when their racing career ends :
The first story is about my dogs- Shyla & Shay and if you scroll down you can read about the original (and special) Katie hound. Shay has now passed his silver... Shyla not one bit interested!!

GSD/ Belgian Malinois cross, I wanted a proper mali but changed my mind at last minute and got him
He managed to have Belgian malinois colours and size and GSD brain, so I'm quite happy with the result.

My mum and dad had two Dalmatians whilst us kids were growing up. I was 4 when we got the first and, after she littered, we had her daughter until she passed when I was about 19. I can't see myself loving another breed like I loved those Dallies. People think they are crazy and hard to handle, but our girls weren't. They were excitable, but so loyal and loving, and great with kids. I remember Abby, our first dog, smiling at my dad with a big grin on her face with us when dad got home from work (smiling is a common trait for dalmatians in particular!).
