Well after being on the phone for 25 minutes and spoken to Thomas Cook, they are going to refund the £800 difference based on their low price policy.

I was really hoping for some kind of consumer rights advice but I guess I'm on the wrong website.

    Thanks for the help.

If they've done that then they've gone over and beyond any low price policy. They only price match on identical products and what you've given them is anything but. They've priced matched purely as a gesture of goodwill.

You should be praising them, not looking for some kind of consumer rights.

Yes thank you for your very constructive replies, she is 67 and has been taken advantage of by a travel agent.

    Sixty seven isn't old.

Standard day on MSE. Oh no, business in 'wanting to make money' shocker! Travel agents don't work for free.

Another who would like to point out that 67 is not old and your mother has not been taken advantage of.

Well done to Thomas Cook for matching the best price, especially as those inte net prices tend to disappear when you click through to book.

and the Thomas Cook offer will be covered by ATOL insurance, booking separate, not so much.

It might be that it was a Thomas Cook package and the sales person added on extra margin.

If it was a Thomas Cook package then the agent doesn't add anything on to the price. It's as per the system. Agencies get paid a % commission on package holidays. It's not like they're buying at nett and marking up aftewards.

He posted yesterday and said they'd agreed to refund the £800. Now whether they did or not I don't know. He could just have been saying it to try and save face ;)

I must say I am shocked at the replies, and think several people here should be ashamed of themselves! Someone came asking for advice, worried for her mother, and people took to scolding and ridiculing her because it is so easy to do from behind a screen!!!

It is true that the mother was not taken advantage of, but there are nice ways of saying things! And don't people have the right to cancel a contract after signing it? It is usually somewhere between 24 hours and 7 days.

Being right doesn't give you the right to ridicule and belittle people. I am sure it made you feel big and very important, eh? Making that poor lady regret asking for advice when she was only trying to help her mum. How would you feel if it was your relative you believed had been ripped off? How would you react. Sometimes empathy is far more important than sympathy.

I wonder how many of you will fall from those high horses of yours? Humility and being humble are important attributes to have and I feel this thread could have been something really positive. But of course humans love chaos and drama.

I hope your mother has a wonderful holiday, and I must admit I agree with the poster above about thanking them for the refund, that was very good of them. xxx
