It would make perfect sense to start negotiations and trigger the exit when there is a clear way forward for all.

27 countries need to agree first.......

EU Law professor denounces leave campaign as misrepresentation and deception that was "criminal"

That's all very well, but he would have way more credibility if he had reviewed the arguments, comments and threats originating with the Remain campaign as well.

I really don't need his analysis of the "£350m" (and that's when I stopped watching) because I already know the arguments around that and its limitations, as did any other reasonably well-informed person well before the date of the Referendum.

The whole notion of "promises" is a moot point. This was a Referendum and therefore any "promises" were always only going to be a general sentiment and could never be commitment on behalf of a future Government. But prefacing each idea with that (unnecessary) disclaimer would have been very, very dull.

That's fine - we are still part of the EU until they do!

That's a change of tune. You claimed Germany ran Europe so why don't we do a deal with them and Merkel will tell everyone else to agree.

And yet free movement of people may well remain in place anyway. Have to admit that the EU has not behaved particularly well in the wake of it. Apparently there is no good reason other than spite to not allow negotiations before invoking Article 50.

I would suppose that in a negotiation you are out to get the best deal for "your side" as possible. Giving away your hand or giving any sort of advantage to the other guys isn't the best tactic. I can completely understand why the EU would refuse to negotiate until article 50 has been invoked. For one thing, It puts both parties in a position where negotiations are now time constrained and despite what you may feel, I guess the EU feel this is in their interest.

If I'm running the EU and a country has just decided to leave, I'd be eyeing out taking as much business as possible from said country, including finance, tech, etc.

After all, we left the EU because we wanted to look out for ourselves right, why would you expect the EU to behave altruistically when we aren't?

Well, some idea of what deal we are going to ask for / accept,

Would announcing that position before negotiations help or hinder getting the best deal possible?

AIUI, once article 50 is invoked if we haven't got a deal (or an agreement to extend) after 2 years we are out with nothing. They can't force us to stay a member, equally we can't remain a member beyond the deadline.

The EU could also lose a lot if a number negotiations are not concluded within the time period - remember that the EU does get quite a lot out of trading with the UK. It would seem pragmatic to make sure both sides are happy (as much as possible) than to flick a switch and potentially leave nasty holes on both sides that would be unnecessary.

Germany has a vested interest to drive matters forward. As with the UK being their 4th largest export market it has a sizable bearing on their economy too. .
