Someone who hoovered every day would strike me as probably OCD and I'd certainly be !!!!ed off if it was after 7. But then I'm a slob ...

    I do it every 2-4 days ;)

But then they use their washing machine pretty much daily, thats another mystery as the most noise you can hear from that is a very muffled vibrartion on final spin so shows the walls are thick enough for that.

A muffled vibration noise is what I hear from the washing machine in the flat upstairs. I wouldn't dream of complaining about it, even though I think it is anti social of them to run it in the evening. I don't run dishwasher/washing machine/hoover after 7. But I turn the tv on or listen to music and although I keep both as low as possible, no way am I going to risk asking if anyone can hear. If they are seriously bothered by it they'd complain.

I think hoovering that time is too late, can't you do it at the weekend.

I agree. Hoovering at that time of night in a block of flats is definitely antisocial - I live in a semi and wouldn't do it after 20.00.

I also second the idea of headphones.

The one thing I wasn't sure how to react to was the hoovering, I normally do it before bed so before 10pm and never later

Latest I would hoover is 20:30.

Re. the music, could you ask to go in their flat while it's on, try different settings/level, checking each time how it sounds in their place.
(at some point while doing this mention how the sound travel so well as you can hear his DIY / how the level is not more than what you can here from theirs etc)

Problem being whats loud to one is quiet to another, it seems. I wonder if its loud enough to annoy them a little but not be a huge nuisance.

And how noise travels, I can't hear noise even in the hallway attached to living room with door closed or at least muffled to the point you can't even make out music or noise but that doesn't mean it can't be heard above or below.

They did say they hear zero noise in other rooms but thats likely more that I don't go in bedroom apart from sleeping or getting something out of cupboard.

So the big issue is that bass which seems more to be down to that hollow wall and/or the fact I have the computer and speakers ona thin wooden desk, they don't hear the noise from the tv which has external speakers.

If the bass is on the floor, lift it off it and away from the wall, and it'll be quieter.

At the same time though, would it not be antisocial of them to hoover and do diy at 7am despite it being waking hours to many people so what would be the balance, it would be easier to find someway to find why the noise is passing through rather than have things basically muted (besides the fact I am unable to wear headphones as would have a panic attack) Would the fact I hear their baby cry at midnight or 6am be their problem or mine? (I am a heavy sleeper so can tolerate it but sometimes it does wake me up for a few minutes before I drift back off) I did mention I hear his baby in a polite way and his response was "shes only one, so theres nothing we can do"

But its really hard to tell, when the previous tenants I never heard them and they never heard me except on the rare extreme occasion and even then and from the way they said things the noise was less a nuisance and more that it was there for the bass.

Hoovering at 7pm at my old block of flats would of been a nightmare as the walls were so thin you could hear everything down to burps and farts

Its on the base of the desk as in its off the ground and away from wall.

But they said the bass was identical when they lived upstairs to when they are downstairs. and it was the guy who mentioned it was hollow walls (he does so much DIY I wonder if thats his job so he would know)

I have lowered the bass to the point its technically now turned off and will ask them in a few days if they hear if, if so then it would be even harder to pinpoint.

They never mentioned how heavy the bass was just that they could hear it.

On the other side of building I can hear the downstairs neighbours play music after work everyday in a noticable way (as if I am in the room with them) where if my computer is on watching a video and I am in hall or outside front door I hear nothing so it just makes it even more confusing,

I've got hi fi speakers in my kitchen which cannot be heard either next door or in the flat below me. I've been in the other flats and listened. I've also recently been given a smallish tv for the kitchen which has very loud, overbearing and booming bass. I've turned the bass to its absolute minimum, -5? to make it listenable. I've also got an old Roberts radio and had a few 14" crt tv's which were surprisingly noisy. If your neighbors are complaining about the bass it probably is to loud.

I suspect video game clips have attention grabbing noise which would be irritating for your neighbors.

I think there is the opportunity to raise his DIY - I agree that 10pm is pretty late to be vacuuming, I'd suggest trying to do it before 9 p.m.

SO far as the Bass is concerned, think you are right that it is travelling through the wall. Would it be possible to move it a little away from the wall, and to aim to use headphones in the evenings.

I'd suggest that you then mention to your neighbour that you're making those changes in light of what he said about what he hears, and at the same time mention that their washing machine and DIY are equally audible, and ask they he refrain from DIY before (say) 9 a.m. and tat they not run the washer after 9 p.m. (or whatever times you feel are appropriate)
