Best SIM free phone, any recommendations?

That's a 5.5inch screen so bigger than what you were looking for.

Plus that 1 is sold by phones 2 post eg a marketplace seller whereas the 1 I linked to is sold by Amazon.

Battery saving mode should be selected for lowest battery use, sometimes the app updates change it to high accuracy and the battery drain will be as you experience.

it was high accuracy, I switched it to Battery saving now, I'll see if ti changes anything

I am mainly looking for good battery life and fast internet connectivity, I guess this one fits the bill? I know diddly squat about phones...

Well fast internet is dependant on the network operator and signal strength but this will do 4G provided your network does. Nexus are the Google own brand (actually the Nexus 5X is made by LG) do they are the first to get updates and aren't bogged down by bloat like some other Android handsets. Some handsets with larger batteries will last longer on a charge but you specifically didn't want something too big so this probably fits the bill nicely and with USB C it will recharge quickly when you need it to.

one last question: I've seen the Moto G4 2nd generation has Android 4.4. I'd like Android 5 as lots of apps nowadays require that and probably more will in the future. is it possible to upgrade Android on this or any other phone? or will it stay 4.4. forever?

cos if it's the latter I'll have to go for the Nexus as it's already Android 6

Updates are dependant on the manufacturer and network with some better than others. You are unlikely to see updates beyond a year past the phone being released, with Nexus being the exception where you get 2 or 3 version updates. e.g. The nexus 5X comes with 6 and will get the next version and any others until at least September 2017 with security updates for a further year after that.
