  • I thought all was going well until today. Got an email asking for Gas and electricity meter readings. Duly read my meters and attempted to provide them on-line as asked. Er no. First they want to know the "meter point number" which apparently they've already sent me in an email. No! not got it. Contacted B Gas and almost by return got another request, this time electricity only but it did have a meter point number. I duly completed this and then contacted B Gas again about the gas reading. Their reply said that the gas supply request had been cancelled but I could ring a number and they'd let me have a gas supply. What a complete shambles. I now don't know whether I'm getting my electricity or gas from Scottish Power or British Gas. I wish I'd never bothered changing.
  • I'm an existing British Gas customer and applied to switch on 6 Feb staying with British Gas but a much cheaper tariff (saving £345 per year!). I'm still yet to hear from BG confirming this. My Cheap Energy Switch account is saying switch in progress.

Should I have received something by now?

Switching both gas and electric. Had emails giving gas switch date but nothing for electric. Just received email asking for meter readings for electric as being switched on the 26th Feb, strange as its now the 27th.
  • SNAP !
Electricity seems to have gone over smoothly but I have exactly the same problem with gas.

I've had all the same sort of emails, 3 date changes, non-existent reference numbers - in reply to my email, they've "lost my gas sale" - left me wondering if I've done the right thing switching... seems British Gas can't cope with the volume.

Oddly, logging on to my old supplier, Scottish Power, the gas part of my account has vanished from the account - so I seem to be provider - less !

Just tried to call B.G. Customer Services & the recorded message says a 15 minute wait......

As their latest email has changed my date to 1st March I shall now wait till after that date & see if this fix works. I don't feel I should be doing all the chasing up by email or start paying for phone calls to correct their mistake.
Unhappy with the whole thing now. If the cooling off period had been longer, I would definitely have cancelled the whole thing.

This SEEMS to happen with all of the Utility Cos. Remember having similar probs. with EDF in 2011 and again with EON in 2014 -you would think that by now, they all would have sorted out their systems ...but alas, come the Collective offer, come the switching problems:)

    Hi all

Sorry to hear that a few of your are having delays with the gas being transferred. I posted on this over on another thread late last week.

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/606930

We've picked this up with British Gas who have explained that although its systems might be reflecting a 'supplier objection', this is a glitch with its process on a particular day (so although frustrating it should only be affecting a small percentage of switches).

It has told us that it has fixed the problem and your gas should move over shortly - you should also get an email/letter from it explaining this to you.

If you are having problems, or wish to speak to someone at British Gas, the best number to ring is 0800 975 9712 - this will go to its specialist collective team in Cardiff who'll be able to provide a fuller explanation.

I hope this helps to explain things.

British Gas should have been in touch - but if you check your online account with British Gas, I'd expect this shows the new tariff as live.

Your Cheap Energy Club account will update in around 3 months.
  • Transferring to Sainsbury's Energy 12 months ago was a nightmare, as many here will remember.

But surely doing the switch now to British Gas should go smoother (as they are the same company trading under two different names)?

Well I suppose it has, but I'm still not filled with confidence.

Introductory emails told me to expect an email requesting meter readings, plus an anticipated transfer date of 24th Feb.

24th Feb still no more emails, so read the meters anyway. No way to enter them at British Gas website ("account not set up yet" even though I could log in), so entered them at the Sainsbury's website.

25th Feb, noticed account now "live" at British Gas website, so read meters again, submitted readings at British Gas website.

26th Feb, received email requesting "opening meter readings". Email full of links that don't work, but happily the "submit reading" link did work, so submitted readings yet again. But this time the web form expected that I have a dual-rate electricity meter, which I don't have.

Oh, and Sainsbury's Energy wrote to me before I switched to tell me my monthly payments were increasing exorbitantly. Of course they were, the one year fix was ending (but the covering letter lied and said it was about my "projected usage"). Well the record shows my monthly payments were about right, but British Gas have chosen to take the same monthly payments as the (new, increased) Sainsbury's suggestion. Seems they think I can help them with their short-term cash flow issues !

I think the duel rate on line form is the same for everyone, you just click on next after entering the first reading then next again to complete, I did and it worked for me.
  • same issue with gas here, instead of 24/02 now told it should be 11/03.

    let's see :)
