  • I've been with virgin since before virgin and I'm being charged over £50 for 70meg bb which I only really get 45 and phone line. Calls only come to a few pence.
I'm sure I could get this down, but what's the best time to ring them? Tired a few time on a Saturday and never get through And can it be done in webchat? I'm really not a confident haggler.

To get the best prices you need to go through to cancellations and give your 30 days notice to leave. Outbound retentions will then call you within those 30 days to try and keep you as a customer and offer you a better deal. Pretty sure this can't be done via web chat, you will have to ring them.

I rang to cancel last Sunday and got a call from retentions on Wednesday and agreed a new 12 month package - no haggling required!
  • My 18 month broadband/TV/phone package was due to come to an end in March - due to some complicated errors/rebates on Virgin's part it was at around £35 and due to go up to over £55.

As I now have a telly with Freeview and rarely watch much outside of the BBC iPlayer or use the phone, I called to try and get it down to just the broadband or I was going to go to NowTV.

After being offered a rubbish deal I cancelled, got a call from retentions and ended up with the 70meg for £22.25 for 12 months, though they reckoned it would be for 18 months.

I did try to get it lower but decided life is too short to spend ages trying to get it to £19.99.

As we don't use the internet for much more than browsing and streaming in the evening, we should be OK with the 70. We'll keep the NowTV app (we have it for £4.49 for the next 4 months) and get Netflix once every 6 months or so to catch-up on things.

70 meg BB is MORE than enough for most (even large) families. Anything more than that is money down the drain. The only time you will see any difference is the time it takes to download large files, in which case the higher the download speed, the quicker it will download. But even then, in most cases we are only talking about differences of seconds or minutes.

For the purposes of streaming and browsing the internet it will make no noticeable difference whatsoever. You, your other half and your 3 kids could all be watching Netflix, YouTube, etc, with a 70 meg connection and everything will run smoothly. These 100mb and 200mb connection speeds are nothing more than a gimmick!
  • I know a friend who had only 50mb broadband and phone (his tv was with Sky) Lucky lad called up less than a month ago to say he wanted to have all 3 together.
He was offered Full House TV (XL), VIVID 200 and weekend phone for....... £35/m... yes a large discount from £76.

Ive tried several times to replicate this but failed. One day after he sealed this deal with the promotional discount of £41, I called trying the same line of enquiry. I have called and live chat a number of times, i have spoken with the cancellation (customer retentions) and still not getting anything like this..

I asked for a better price on my Virgin 50mb broadband and phone, and was told the special price.... that this was £3/month more than I am paying just now!!

On another note, my Sky tv has been cancelled, and now they have offered 60% off the full pack including Cinema and Sports.

This is more to raise awareness of the Full House deal at £35, is there any other great deals like this...

Rang them earlier today to say that I am thinking of joining BT as my £83 per month is getting too much. We have super fibre 60, free weekend calls, XL TV, a Tivo box and a V+ box.
Had a good look at BT through Nhs discounts and worked it out to between £50 and £55 per month.
This was for Infinity 1, free evening and weekend calls, Kids TV bolt on, BT sports and BT sport for mobile/tablet.
I have a couple of Chromecasts so would watch BT sport in kitchen/bedroom etc and wouldn't need another BT box.
Have been with Virgin for over 20 Years but would genuinely move to BT for that price. I told Virgin team that I also have 4 mobile deals with them and am spending close to £140 a month in all.
She said best deal could offer was £68 for my same package on a 12 Month contract.
Said thanks but am still thinking about going to BT.
Although I haven't cancelled I had an email earlier this evening saying that my " 6 weeks of free Sky Sports " is about to end.
Funny, but they only gave it to me on 20th of January, as per their email to me.
I will wait and see if they want to match the price I had worked out from BT.

  • If you haven't actually cancelled yet, they have no incentive to match anything. You have to show you are serious about moving, not just trying to cut a deal.

If I rung today to cancel with them, my bill date is about a week away, could I expect the disconnection/retention department to ring me before then?
Maybe expect is the wrong word, maybe presume?

I think disconnection is 30days from notice

Bill date has nothing to do with it. And you pay in advance anyway
