Thanks bubbs and gocat - I did look at the other forum but couldn't make head nor tail of it ! Problem is I don't know anything about pips, esa etc and don't know how his benefits are made up. I knew that some benefits were means tested (as they should be) but we hoped that the compensation could be used to ease the ongoing situation just a bit. If all their benefits are stopped and they are expected to live on the lump sum then it won't last very long.

Things are tight for them - even though both ds and dil are both disabled and can only walk short distances(with sticks) they have just had dil's motobility car withdrawn following reassessment even though her health issues are worse than when she was awarded the car 3 years ago !

I have told him to discuss it in detail with his solicitor . You never stop worrying about your kids do you .
Well to find out you need to know what they get i guess, my customer that is disabled with a brain injury from a car accident 30 ys ago has just had his money cut, yes he has to also pay for his care, yes he has savings only becuase he lives in the family home and his parents never took any board and lodgings but they still cut his money

Does anyone have any knowledge of how ss benefits are affected if someone is awarded compensation for an accident ? The company concerned has taken responsibility for re-imbursing the past 3 years benefits which were paid while the claim was being processed and then my son will receive compensation directly. However there is no immediate prospect of him going back into employment as the works injury is no better and without major surgery its not likely to improve so he will remain registered disabled - advice on whether he will still be able to claim benefits is all a bit vague. The payout is not enormous but it is enough to ease his situation if he still gets benefits but if the benefits are stopped and he is expected to live on his compensation then he and his family will be much worse off than they are now ! There was a suggestion that the payout could be held in trust and that he could just draw a bit out now and then.

I wondered if anyone had any experience of a similar situation.

Many people are being re-assessed and entitlement withdrawn. I would recommend that he gets advice from a specialist (prob. a charity). x
