    Does the theory work?

I think DS1 has once been to the bar, he was sweating! OH tends to give them £20 to go to the bar....but I realised that he never gets change.

At least DS1 is buying most of his own clothes.... the other two don't know how to shop for clothes, or to have their hair cut in a barbers.

Whilst DS3 is much more independent.... but board and lodging is still a fictional topic! I have just had words with him about bringing a lady home for some hows your father when we don't know her name, and he has no intention of entering into a relationship with her.... the house is not a knocking shop! He has retreated to his room!

No the theory does not work but I grit my teeth and keeping picking up the restaurant bills and always will.
I suppose they are used to the shocking London centered prices and everything here looks so cheap in comparison

My lads were buying their own clothes from very early on, the eldest at 17 - he had an obsession with black t shirts and had 50 at one time. Errant son needs specialist outdoor clothes which are very expensive, I would not know here to start.

No I think that is really where I would draw the line, DS3 and his casual liaisons - def would not put up with this, random strangers showing up at breakfast ...

    I feel that way too.

DD earns 6 x what I do, and when she was married so did her OH, so that was 12 x.

I really need to back down a bit financially...

I think we need to grow backbones and before we go anywhere we have to state our case - say to our nearest and dearest, if you want to choose where we eat then you can also pay the bill :D

These were so old mhoc they were unusable ..even for the food bank :(

This a valuable lesson to those that buy rakes and rakes of stuff with little prospect of ever using...is not a bargain if you are not gonna use it....no matter how little it cost...best to leave it on the shelf for some one who will make use of it ;)

You were generous, I would have gone mad.

Years ago we returned to live in the village that I was raised in, at the same time my best friend also returned and lives nearly opposite me. She had the wonderful suggestion of her OH helping my OH, and visa versa do the houses up. But every time it was organised that her OH would do some labouring, she would have an emergency so he could not help. He must have done 3 half days all together, whilst OH converted her loft, move the bathroom upstairs, knocked the kitchen through/plastered/new kitchen, new bathroom, remodelling the bedrooms. One day she walked around the corner to see her OH in our garden working, she screamed at him that he needed to be at home doing her house. I have never spoken to her since... selfish c*w. Her OH is lovely but very down trodden. This year he asked my OH if he would fit him a new kitchen, and the daft s*d was going to do it until I raised my issues. Another friend agreed to do it for them, but is charging a fortune and is taking months..... it still is not done. If only she had not been so selfish, she would have had it done in a week for free and would not have lost a good friend!

Yes this is quite common among friends and family I find ...some just take take and take again ...each family has its own member

Then when it is their turn to repay the kindness they then become ...

oh I work... I am busy or no spare time ...or well you shouldn't do a favour or a kindness and expect something back in return

    Even if it's only respect

Or they say well you offered ...as if its your fault for trying to help

This world will always be made up of takers and givers as it will also be made up of Scrooges and waster's

    I quite agree.

I actually stopped doing the meals out when I moved up here. Before that, I often used to meet them halfway, about every 4-6 weeks, to catch up over a long lunch at a really nice independent pub. Me treating them, of course.

Made me smile, because they'd always both eat from the menu, 3 full courses, drinks bill, the lot, whereas I was quite happy with something from the specials board and a jug of water. :D

During the student years when we went up to see eldest child and we went anywhere we tended to pay for everything - this was often a war of nerves as I would want to go to places to eat or drink where I could use vouchers and discount offers and cheap and cheerful did not bother me, eldest child would die of shame.

Now when we go up we still pay for meals out but she is careful to choose places with set priced menus that wont have me hyper ventilating. She will now tolerate me using vouchers and offers to pacify me.
I let eldest child foot the bar bills though as I will usually have just lime and soda :)

The tables are tuned now though as eldest child and BF both work in London and their salaries are vast so we are now the poor relations (and if OH ever retires, even more so)
So in theory its them that should now be treating us when we go out :D

Our children never see the cost of anything when around mam and dads bank

But a lady I know in her 40's expects large expensive presents as she has no children and expects the parents to buy her the equivalent cost of 2 adult and 3 childrens Christmas presents that are given to her siblings families and gets quite narked if she thinks her parents have " diddled her ":eek:

Although her parents paid for only her to go to uni she had no overdraft etc etc and she now earns more than any of them :eek:.

But now forgets that they did that .... and even at her age wants what she thinks she is entitled to off Santa :mad:

Reindeer girl was a casual breakfast guest, who he clearly liked so whilst I was uncomfortable with it I never said anything.. but it is different when it is just a bit of fun.

DS1 had the outdoor specialist clothing, we have jackets that were hundreds of pounds, garage full of kayaking equipment, climbing equipment, downhill bikes, diving equipment... anything expensive he wanted it. Now he lives out of a bag...:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: and the other kids use his kit!
