I have put them off twice so far.

The meters belong to the energy company who fits them so if you change supplier in the future they have to be changed again! !

I have been looking into this and am trying to put off for as long as possible.

I upgraded to smart meteres and then changed supplier but they didn't need to be changed. The meters simply aren't smart anymore

    Good morning all,
I am a befriender with AgeUK and their charge for shopping last year when I joined was £18 per hour, and odd jobs such as your Dad is offering was £20 per hour. I have to say that I was shocked at the level of these charges and am not surprised that many dont use them as most could not afford that. It seems that the admin staff are pretty well paid, it is only the volunteers that work for nothing.
I wish there was another such organisation that wasnt in the money making business but was run solely by volunteers. I agree about looking out for elderly neighbours, that is as good a place to start as any, unfortunately I am the elderly neighbour in the street!!
(they are all very young where I live)

It's a difficult one that's for sure. More and more people are going to need help as the population ages, and the council services and NHS can't cope as it is. I can't see there ever being enough volunteers to help deal with the number of people that will need assistance, and what about those who don't even have family nearby to help out, it's a tough one and I don't see that there are any easy answers.

My dad doesn't charge as much as that, but to be honest it doesn't seem to be a money issue, partly because it's a wealthy area, but more often because the customers don't think they need help, not because it's too expensive.

For example, he had one potential customer recommended because she was a friend of one of his current customers. She said she really needed someone to help out a couple of times a week and would really appreciate the assistance because her husband has Alzheimer's and she is in poor health herself. But unfortunately her husband's illness means he doesn't realise how bad the situation has become and how much his wife is struggling, and he binned my dad's contact information and continues to insist that they're managing just fine, so that's that! :(

The following is a warning to everyone who has a wheat bag that they use instead of a hot water bottle. I'm sure many of you are aware of the dangers already, but my dad is trying to spread the message on social media as he has seen the effects first-hand. In particular, a lot of his elderly customers prefer them as they don't want to pour boiling water into a hot water bottle.
I would post the photo he took of the burnt-out microwave, but I don't know how, but it would be great if you could read the following and let all your loved ones and neighbours know.

One of my customers had a fire in their Microwave after heating a wheatbag to warm the bed which I know a lot of people do. The house was filled with an acrid smoke and it has taken days to clear.

The day after the incident a lady from the local fire brigade came to chat and she confirmed that they had had 5 such incidents this winter already. Apparently the wheat dries out until tinder dry and then they burst into flame.

I searched the internet tonight to find a series of warnings from area brigades but most people I speak to are not aware of the risks.
You may wish to pass on the following advice to friends and family. The info below comes from the Cheshire fire brigade website.

    Overheating and fire risks
Continual heating and drying of the wheat bag may overheat it to ignition point. When heating it in a microwave, place a cup or bowl of water in with the wheat bag to reduce this risk.
If the wheat bag is kept insulated after initial heating (for example, placed under bedclothes, or on a car seat in the sun), spontaneous heating can then occur and the wheat may catch fire.

    Safety tips
    Do:
Buy wheat bags with clear heating instructions.
Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Buy wheat bags which include a manufacturer’s contact details in case you have a problem.
Use only as a heat pack for direct application to the body.
Watch for over-use – an over-cooked odour, a smell of burning, smoking or charring.
Leave to cool in a safe area and on a noncombustible surface, like a kitchen sink.

    Do not:
Do not use wheat bags as bed warmers.
Do not over-heat (recommended maximum is three minutes for manufactuered bags).
Do not reheat the bag until it has completely cooled – which may be two hours after initial heating.
Do not leave the microwave unattended when heating a bag.
Do not store the wheat bag until it is cold.
Do not use the bag if you observe any problems – contact the manufacturer

I'm off to T in a bit to get some fizz....I only need the cheap stuff so has anyone seen any prosecco cheaper than the £5 plaza that thay have on offer from today?

Just a general q to throw open to all....when do you actually start eating your christmas food....for weeks we seemed to have been getting bits and bobs together, but when does everyone actually start tucking in....

For us it will be tomorrow evening when we are having cold meats and fishy bits with maybe a bit of cheese....then probably most of that will need replenishing for another similar type of meal between christmas and new year.

I think I'm getting a little bit fed up of opening the fridge and seeing all these nice nibbly bits that are there under the pretence of being "for christmas" with no indication of when the eating actually starts

if just general fizz you need A`s have a cava in the 6 for £24 that started today.:)

We tend to start eating our "christmas food", when everyone is home and finished work, school, so in our case will be Wednesday when OH finishes for christmas. Funny that, it tends to be when the heating is turned on aswell :rotfl::rotfl:
