cjj....I guess first off you need to do a realistic budget for everything that needs doing then add on a contingency fund of maybe 20%...whilst you know about some things that need replacing, you will uncover others that need doing as you go along.

I must admit I found it a very stressful time doing the first renovation, but it was my old family home too so there was added sentimentality too...after we did it I swore we would never get involved in anything like it again and told my family to keep me away from rightmove....and 4 years on I am still logging on to the site and being very tempted by what I see!

Seriously though if you do need any advice I'm more than happy to give a few pointers...but be warned it does become a bit addictive!!!!

Hi LEJC what sort of figures am I looking at for surveys, solicitors and estate agents etc. Tia ? xx

It's nearby and with its own car park spot :). Checked the local property prices. Auctions scare me though haha xx

They are what people call computer points, but they are more community I cation points and have a very wide range of uses.

Depends what you are buying really....if its a freehold house its a lot cheaper than a leasehold flat for the conveyancing.

We opted for a basic survey on the recent flat as it' almost new build but you should get the best survey for the age and type of property ...possibly £400-500 you need to be able to identify faults and its a good way of getting a clear picture of what might need doing...
our solicitor fees will come in at about £1500 but thats because we are buying leasehold and needing to sort out some extra documents .
I think if you get some quotes for conveyencing they should be around £500 plus disbursements plus vat.

If your buying there are no EA fees....only for selling....no idea on that as we 've never sold.
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

    2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend

    Fire away cjj....

although we now have almost 4 rentals so not quite the same,we did a full and extensive renovation of property number 1 back in 2012-13...we basically took it back to a shell..not much I dont know about renovations and getting the most for your money on that front!

property 2 needed a partial renovation of windows and internal bathroom/kitchen .....property 3 needed a tidy up and cosmetic things like painting and carpets and hopefully property 4 wont need anything doing to it.

we are mid way through the purchase of number 4 at the moment so I can probably give you chapter and verse about buying too!!!!!

Move over Sarah Beeney....you've got competition:rotfl:

Mr monkey would like to do that but I'd like a chateaux or something we could rent out as a holiday let and use ourselves when the monkeys are old enough to look after their selves.... 50 years time should do it!!

2 minutes peace and quite so I thought I'd pop in and say hello;) mr sunshine has just put in an appearance after the doom and gloom of the last few days:)

Autocorrect strikes again - communication points.

Basically you plug something in one end and it comes out the other, Internet, telephone, TV etc.

    Good morning all....

I now officially need a bucket load of glitches....talk about students being poor,as a parent I'm feeling the pinch too!!!!!

Accommodation is now sorted for the next 41 weeks of study....but the downside was we had to sign a direct debit for almost £6000,taken I may add in 4 "convenient instalments "...for them yes...for me thats debatable.

I'm off out this morning to find bedding, towels and duvet covers...
DS is off to the Halifax to switch his current account and earn £100 switching bonus,so at least he's on the MSE route...

.....Actually I'm loving it all(whatever the cost).....and still smiling that he's managed his dream!

This post reminds me of LaLa's posts in aug 12 when I had just joined mse. Nice to follow the next children to uni. Although I think LaLa had the linen and towels sorted long before A levels were sat:eek::rotfl:
I send a help parcel to my niece sometimes with essentials in but apparently all the lads get sent homemade cake:)

Don't know if the gift cards are available or if you get extra points, but there is no reason why you wouldn't get the TSB cash back for a contactless purchase.

Thanks. Managed to get a £15 amazon voucher, used TSB contactless so that will be 75p back and got 375 Morrie points which I think are worth 37p :rotfl:
So anyway, just over a £1 back overall. Every little helps  (ooops wrong shop) . Might do this at Christmas for gifts. :o

The first payment is 3 figures and paid on or around the 8th sept...I think this is the deposit and thats followed by 3 four figure payments in October,January and April....it could have been funded in 9 instalments but they wanted another £90 admin fee for that

I'm sure that over the next few weeks I will indeed need lots of questions answering not just specifically about accommodation and I'm so very grateful of anyone who offers any help or advice going...
I was chatting to DS this morning and the reality of it all has I think started to kick in that he's actually going...I won't deny there were a few tears but we are all really convinced that it's the right thing to do.

Coming to the end of 8 years of having a child at uni. Ask away!

Lol. We have done that - though an apartment rather than chateaux. Problem is that we book it up for renting and end up going elsewhere.

Always remember my mother sending cake in the post. was crumbs by the time it arrived but I didn't have the heart to tell her, so more kept on arriving.
