For Royal Mail purposes, it will be 'Post Town', not County.

It does seem odd that technology cannot be brought to bear on this issue so that the Postal and Political boundaries are aligned. I cannot believe that the Royal Mail still need the potentially misleading "Postal Town" in the address in order that they can take the post to the right local sorting office.

Just checked my old address on the Postcode Finder and it still has its misleading Postal Town, although it does also have the Village name as well, now.

They don't need it - the postcode does all that on its own.

But, in the absences of the postcode, it would get the letter to the right part of the country.

The village I grew up in shared a name with at least seven other places around the country - two of which are MUCH larger. Miss the postcode? It's stuffed, probably the other end of the country. Put the post town? It's three miles away.

This postcode discussion is comepletely futile.

Postcodes have little to do with actual geographical proximity.

Try PH - for Perth which is PH1

Then have a look at where PH33 - Fort William - over 100 miles away.

Or PH42, PH43, and PH44 - The islands of Eigg, Rum, and Canna - another 50 miles (and a ferry trip) to the West.

The island of Muck has the same postcode as Mallaig PH41 - which is where the ferry-boat leaves from!

A subject for Mastermind I think.

So each time the boundary commission recommendtions are accepted (as they are due to be soon, and typically every few years), you'd be happy to have a new address?

    Keep them separate, I say!

I live in a part of Wales where a postcode area is shared across England and Wales - SY.

It's unlikely that the local town would change its name. So, if that town is already the Postal Town for the address, there is no problem (that's the case for my present address).

For my old address, where the Postal Town is 25 miles away, that needs fixing anyway. In those cases, I think "near" nearest town would be more helpful. (In my case, the nearest large town was 9 miles away, so that would have made much more sense than the actual Postal Town chosen by RM).

We aren't just talking about postcodes, but also about postal towns.

The issue is that if the Royal Mail is the sole authority for deciding the official address of a property, then they probably ought to be considering more than just the location of the local sorting office.

I used to live south of Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. (T&W county council).

My postal address was Town, Chester-let-Street, County Durham. Regardless of that, it came under the auspices of T&W county council. :)
