I tried the first option and burnt it, although differently to how you said, started my laptop and put the dvd in. My laptop did try to do something with the dvd and after a while nothing happened. I then took out the dvd and put her off. When I put her on again a minute later I selected the option of repairing the drive and after it done that it eventually started.
I hope this makes sense to you because I still don't know why it wasn't working in the first place, never mind how it started going again:eek: so thank you. :j  :money: :T :A
I hope the next day or two isn't as stressful on you as trying to explain to me what to do.:rotfl:
Your next step should be considering an upgrade to Windows 7, as Vista will soon be obsolete.
A clean install to SSD is preferable or you can simply back up your data to an external drive and clean install to the current hard drive. But as the current hard drive is eight years old, a newly fitted SSD will have added benefit in comparison.
Though the first step would be to update the current firmware.
To do this, you will need a USB Flash drive of any capacity. Small capacity is fine.0 -

She has closed herself down a few times since. Yesterday afternoon Avast stated that something was trying to close it and it give me 60 seconds to decide whether to close Avast or not, obviously I chose not to close Avast.
Defender stated there was an error but when it ran a scan, which it hadn't finished at 1am this morning, it seemed to restart the scan because at 2am it stated the scan had started at 01:57 but when I looked at 6am it had froze, I do not know what is wrong with it. I am currently running Avast to see what it finds.
Do you think I would honestly be capable of doing any of the above when you see the hassle I gave you when I tried to get this laptop to switch on again in the first place? :eek:0 -

You can certainly try. As to whether you are capable....it depends on whether you can follow simple instruction, step by step. It is not difficult if you can do that.
The first thing that I would check would be the hard drive. It might be failing.
Go to Computer and right click on C: drive and select Properties > Hardware. What brand your HDD?0 -

I haven't been online for a few days so apologies for my delay in responding to you. It is a Toshiba.
She was installing Windows updates and it took her a few attempts but she seems to have got there. She has loaded since without any issues.
I have an external drive but I need to do a back up to it although I do not remember how I did it the last time.

Thank you for your help. It will be the end of July before I get to do this - not getting the chance to be near the computer these days.0
