the three recovery disks will only reinstall Vista to how it was when the lappy was first switched on, losing all the docs/pics/music etc. in the process. Nifty is helping you to avoid that if possible ;)

The discs were only created on the 29th March last year.

Save Niftys suggestion to a dvd?

Is your friends computer Vista or Windows 7 up?

Hopefully the current disc check may solve the issue.

The computer operates Windows 7. How long should the disc check take?

No idea as to how long it will take. It takes as long as it takes.

When you have downloaded the image, place a blank DVD in the drive, right click on the image and choose Windows DVD Image Burner. Place a tick in Verify

Thank you. Will I let it finish what it is doing first?

It seems to have stopped because it is saying "24198714 free clusters processed" for over an hour now. The hard drive light is blinking a lot less often and a lot dimmer than before and the laptop is not making any noise, the fan isn't coming on.

I didn't have that as an option so I selected the following option instead "Send to DVD Drive". Should I now insert this DVD into my own laptop because she hasn't done anything in about 2 hours?
