Oh and the other thing.
Could you consider renting a room in your house out even short term?
If you could it is tax free under the government rent a room scheme ( there is a cap but it is quite high).I am a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Mortgage Free Wannabe & Local Money Saving Scotland & Disability Money Matters. Have you looked at flights from Dublin? They can be cheaper than flights from the UK, even allowing for travel from UK to Dublin.
The big advantage of Dublin is that you can do the immigration check there, rather than in the USA on arrival.
Dublin flights also go to hubs that aren't available from the UK, such as Cincinnati ( much less stressful than the New York airports.)0 -
Good idea Fen.
Agree beanie. Know that they have the holidays house but was wondering about short term Air BnB or lodger? Think former probably as believe it's quite remote.
Hope all good pooh

Hi, I have been busy and have hardly been in the house until the last hour. I should have been at a family party which I decided not to go to. I am relieved as I really wouldn't have enjoyed it. I am shattered.
One thing I wondered about after reading your ideas about airbnb was maybe hosting a summer student. I did a bit of research before coming back on here and find that we are too remote for students but the airbnb might work. Mr P has never really taken to having strangers in the house but he might be persuaded if it means it is easier to raise the money to go to the wedding. As a youngster I did a lot of travelling and stayed with strangers and always felt perfectly safe. Mr P was much more of a home bird so maybe that is where he gets his reticence. We have two empty bedrooms, one is en suite which might suit a traveller. We are also on the Pennine way so could have walkers here for one night at a time which Mr P might find easier than having someone in the house for a week. I will pick my moment
Fen I have looked at flights from Dublin but will definitely go back and look again. Last time it was cheaper to go via Paris but things change all the time. I know one of my sons travelled via Dublin in the last couple of years....
Browntoa, I think you hit the nail on the head. I don't work for a variety of reasons and one is that I can make mistakes, memory isn't always 100% plus I do random things like transpose numbers. I don't have the confidence to take on something which requires careful thought and planning and where I could lose everything. I am not a chancer.
Sugarplum I had already forgotten about the 15% tip required during our stay, thank you. And thank you, I will have a look at Make £10 a day thread.
I wish I could say I made some money towards our holiday yesterday and today but I haven't yet...business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527

£16.55 cashback claimed from Quidco today. Still just small amounts but working on a variety of others I would never of thought of without this thread.
Last night I signed up for four university research projects which pay just a little. There was one on offer in Leeds which required a two week stay and was worth £2000. I can't do it as I have hospital appointments during that time but it might be of use to someone else on here. I don't think either Mr P or I fit their criteria but it does show these offers are available for fitter and healthier people.
I have signed up to Make £10 a day and will make some time each day to pursue my £10 each day....
We have had a chat about airbnb for our own home. Mr P is still not happy but accepts that we have to come up with something more concrete to make some money fast. And having people here for one nighters is probably easier for him than having a lodger...
The other option is to offer a room as storage to someone who needs to store items in a dry place. Most lockups around here are pretty damp because of the climate....
I have my mum's gold watch..... which I could sell but not for anywhere near it's sentimental valueIf we get close to needing the cash I will sell but will hold off for now.
Fbook has some good local selling pages so I am putting some mirrors and pictures on there. Things I will find it difficult to post...
Will update signature later. I might find more cash somewhere.....business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527

It is definitely worth considering home boarders for your dog. There are lots of people who like to travel the world and will move into houses for a few weeks at a time for free board an lodgings while they do so. I looked into it a while ago for our hens.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

Mrs P, have you done this "Do a Money Makeover"?
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/money-help
Like it says at the top: "Taking a day to cut your bills, treating it like a job, saves many £1,000s over the year."
And: "What if I don't have the time?... then make the time."
Step 2 in that makeover's fantastic and I'd recommend it to anyone
It's not just about cutting bills either.0
