Sorry Mrs P but I wouldn't be sure if I was him either!
No, actually I would be sure. Sure I wouldn't be selling them!
I think with collections like that the value continues to increase over time, so you'd be missing out on a better price later if you got rid of them now.
They're assets and the value will go up, so I'd only be looking to sell things where that's not the case.0 -
Thank you for the new link - I'm delighted to join you here !
Your US holiday plans sound wonderful, and I'm sure that once even a small amount goes into the holiday 'pot' it will seem you are a little nearer.
There is a LOT of stamp selling on eBay, but many go for minimal prices. Better to research first.
Without wishing to be disrespectful to whizzbang - I wouldn't touch betting with a very long barge-pole ! Betting companies proliferate because people LOSE money, same with online Bingo, Scratchcards etc.
I'm not sure how far away your nearest university is, but I'm on the books for a variety of paid studies, which involve cognitive and memory testing (say £20-£40 in cash or vouchers), and Nutrition studies. I did a test (very safe - it's not like a medical trial) last year of the effects of blueberry flavenoids (I had either the blueberry or a placebo) for 6mths for £200, and am doing an olive leaf extract one currently - £170. But you do have to be near enough for the payment not be eaten up in petrol !! Some pay whatever your travel costs are.0 -

They weren't talking about betting, but matched betting which is a different thing altogether. You do need a fair pot of cash to be able to move around though, and there is always the risk of an error, so I wouldn't recommend it here.0 -
Just an idea , but do you use the cashback sites such as quidco
They have intial offers for bingo etc i.e. deposit and play £10 but receive more in cashback, worth a look.
Also see the blog Aldi to Harrods for some useful tips.
and another idea see the competition forums on here - you could always sell any unwanted prizes , and prizes are tax free.0 -

Matched betting is sort of like quidco in a way, you need to read the guides a few times to get your head round it to be sure you understand it 100% but basically say england play spain or someone, you place a bet that england will lose, then a different sort of bet that they will win (read the guides) you can't do it on any old game, you have to make sure the odds match up in a certain way. What you're doing is trying to make it that the money you win cancels out the money you lose near enough. So why are you doing it? For the free cash back type offers the bookies offer to make you bet in the first place. I did it a few years back but just stopped as I was going to move and didn't want lots of gambling to show on my bank statements - even though it isn't really gambling if you're doing it right.
One thing I would say though is with the esa, there are rules about how long you can be out of the country on holiday, I believe if it is over 28 days you have to tell the dwp, and it could cause you problems. It might be worth asking on the benefits board if you don't know the details before you book the flights, just so you don't end up messing up your claim, rather than going straight to the dwp and causing yourself unnecessary problems if you don't need to declare it for under 28 days.MFW OP's 2017 #101 £829.32/£5000

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
There are 2 types of ESA - income-related or contribution-based.
You can get both of these for 4 weeks if you go abroad.
Talk to your local Jobcentre Plus before you go.
Going abroad for more than 4 weeks but less than a year
Tell your local Jobcentre Plus if you’re going abroad for more than 4 weeks.
You can carry on getting contribution-based ESA for up to 26 weeks if you’re going abroad for medical treatment for yourself or your child.

Matched betting is not betting, correct- it's a misleading term really. You can't go wrong if you follow PA's guides to the letter and take a little bit of time to learn it in the 1st place. I was way dubious of it for years, even though there is a whole board about it here on MSE. But this site has enabled me to understand and achieve it. Really, you are only going to make a mistake if you can't read or aren't careful. I suggest you read the guides here on MSE and on PA if you are unsure how or why it works. Personally I found PA easier to understand, MSE just put me off. Matched betting is tax free so long as it's your only income. You do not need to have a large pot of money, you need nothing to get started- except an internet connection! You build up the money as you move through the offers (the way it's set up on the site I'm recommending). You can do their free trial to make £45 and then see if you want to go from there. I started with £0 and quickly built up to £1.5K within 2 months. More is possible, but I was going at my own speed.
Even if you're on ESA, you are entitled to do permitted work. Let's face it, most people can do some kind of work and the fact is, it helps most people's health to improve. It could even be work from home- again read the guides on MSE- there are a million ways to make money from home. And don't have a go at me for saying that, I have a disability myself and was on ESA in the past. Now I'm a trained AHP and it's also my job now to help people with disabilities back into work, so I do know what I'm talking about.
For your flights, make sure you're following the MSE guides on how to find cheap flights and have you looked into Air Transat? My family use them when flying to/ from the States. With the location they fly to/ from, it's also cheaper/ easier to fly via Canada. You might want to consider getting your son to book your flights from inside the US too, as that is often cheaper particularly as the exchange rate will be in your favour.
OP- I would not recommend getting into more debt over this, as some others have suggested. I can see from your signature, you're already carrying significant levels of debt, despite having paid off some. The better advice IMHO as others have already said, is to only do what you can afford to do. You are not obliged to pay for others transport, meals or anything like that whilst you are there.Minimalist
