Remember, Windows 10 is the last full operating system from Microsoft. There won't be another "new" operating system for 20/30/50 years (unless they go back on their word, which is hichly unlikely)..

No, quite wrong. You may wish to check W10's support expiry date of 2025 here:

Why don't you just bite the bullet and install Windows 10 as your main OS?

All these people not wanting to bother, yet they upgraded to Windows 7 without any hesitation!

It's all about patching and updating the existing software these days. Creating something entirely new is time consuming and a waste of resources. Apple, despite their faults, have been doing this for ages.

OK Tried a Clean Install - from the latest image (on USB) - That too failed - giving me the useful error message "Something Happened, Windows 10 installation has failed" - I am installing on to a 512Gb SSD with the BIOS set correctly - yet I am still unable to install Win 10 - MS also tried remotely (TWICE !!) last week and failed.....
http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/software/operating-systems/1401617/how-to-clean-install-windows-10-and-create-boot-media mentions this error message and I have followed their advice and changed the location to USA - guess what > No Difference (same error)

You have mis-interpreted what they've written:
A device needs to install the latest update to remain supported. Not all features in an update will work on all devices. A device may not be able to receive updates if the device hardware is incompatible, lacking current drivers, or otherwise outside the Original Equipment Manufacturer’s (“OEM”) support period.

I guess Microsoft's announcement was a lie then:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/microsoft/11597114/Windows-10-will-be-final-version-of-Windows.html

The Verge article explains it quite well.
Look at the latest version of Office, Office 365 - cloud computing - subscription based. This is what "Windows as a service" means. The core Windows will remain the same but may, and I expect, it will become subscription based in the future.

By 2025, hardware will have moved on significantly - looking at the amount of tablet devices being released, capable of things many home computers aren't.

While things may change, it's highly likely that they won't. Just as broadcast TV as we know it will be dead within 10 years. It's all about "on demand" and how programmes will simply become available on demand, rather then broadcast. Rolling news channels and shopping channels will be among the last to go. Although that's a different subject - I digress :P

There's no other reference numbers? That's very strange as usually there's some sort of fault reference number. (0x0054320 or similar).

I guess your hardware has been inspected and Windows says it's okay to install?

You could try a clean install of whatever operating system you have at the moment, then upgrading it?

OK I finally got Win 10 installed on my desktop machine
I had to reset the windows update components "manually" - then clean install from a bootable installation - rather than an "in-place" update
Before anyone says "A clean install will not be affected by any previously installed updates..." I agree - but MS advise me and it worked - so that's it - I am now running (a "modified") Win 10 and I may stick with it - it is considerably faster than Win 7 !!

I guess everyone assumed that you were installing from Boot from the beginning of the clean install process.

    Yes

It's marketing testicles by MS. It will be the last version until they release a next version.

However the fact currently remains W10 support expires in 2025 using evidence from Microsoft's own figures.
