It might be worth checking on Groupon as they often have some brilliant deals for Lake District accommodation. I visited in April and got a deal for dinner, bed and breakfast at a really lovely hotel at a fraction of the normal cost.
The Lake District is beautiful (drive along Hardknott Pass, it's heart-stoppingly spectacular!) but the accommodation can be really expensive.0 -

This would leave £120 for drinks and anything else we wanted to do! By shopping, I meant local village shops, but these aren't a necessity!
Both of our first times booking a holiday so please feel free to tell me if I've missed anything or am way out with my prices haha!
Will check that out! Didn't really want a shopping hotspot anyway
In your OP you said you wanted a cottage rather than b&b, which I don't think you'll get.
However, I still think £60 for 6 adult meals is pushing it a bit and you said earlier that you wanted to do activities as well.0 -
If you like carvereis there is a Crown carvery which overlooks Lake Windermere. We like carveries and have always enjoyed the food and if you can get a seat by the window you will have spectacular views.0

You just need to pop a tent and sleeping bag in your boot and go wild camping for free:

Buy any drinks from Aldi or Lidl before you go. Lots of lovely walks to do. Loads of free parking.
Avoid Kendal mint cake - it's poisonous.
Wetherspoons in Kendal, Keswick and Penrith if you want to splash out on a meal.0 -

I can concur with the Groupon offers....if you can get one, they're real bargains.
However, depending what car you drive, the Hardnott Pass is definitely not for the faint-hearted. I came across this particular route when, on the way home, I put "shortest route" into the sat nav after visiting my family in Whitehaven.
We have a big car and there were many times when I couldn't see the road at all as the bonnett was high in front of us due to the terrain. Looking out of the side windows there was about 4 inches of tarmac at either side of the tyres.....it was terrifying and I'm far from being a nervous driver.
There were signs which read "not suitable for HGV" but in all honesty, I believe its only really suited to motorbikes, cycles and walkers. We never saw another car while we were there and once en route, there's no chance of turning back.
Have a look on YouTube for videos, but as for me... never again :eek:I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -
Just in case you are of the opinion that Kendal mint cake is not poisonous here is a top MSE money saving tip:
When mountaineering instead of eating Kendal mint cake £8.49 for 550g on Amazon
Why not just eat Silver Spoon White Sugar Cubes 500g only £1 from Morrisons.
For the minty taste you could also add 4 packs of polos also a £1 from Morrisons.
What I actually find quite scary are the reviews for it on Amazon. You do have to worry about the health of people in this country.0 -
Copeland is a less popular option but cheaper.
You can venture further out to other places you don't have to stay there all the time.
I haven't stayed in Copeland but I know someone who did and they enjoyed it. They did the catbells to brandlehow walk and took the pleasure boat from brandlehow stage.Britain is great but Manchester is greater0 -

Again, not your cup of tea, but certainly not poisonous .
In the true spirit of MSE, Kendal Mint Cake is much better value when purchased from a retailer, than from Amazon.
The reviews all seemed fair to me !0 -

The lake district is very beautiful, as you can see from pictures, but the only time I've actually been it poured with rain the entire weekend and as a result was one of the most miserable breaks I've ever had.
I'm not sure how unlucky we were getting a rainy weekend, but in my experience you really need good weather or a great place to stay so that you don't care if the weathers bad.
Clearly not built for the lakes, the most beautiful days are when your soaking wet through and stood atop a hill watching the showers form in different areas.
Ill second the camping, could do it for less than £100 camping. If you want to push the boat out look at the camping pods (wood huts).
Can personally recommend http://grizedale-camping.co.uk/?PODS
the owner is a really nice guy and the pitches are in a beutiful location. The pods go up into the woods and your allowed camp fires, we camped around march time and had the fire going, the smoke billowing through the woods was like something out of robin hood, magical!
As to where to go, any of the lakes youll find touristy spots (while its a big area its not too hard to get around). Grizedal forest is a very nice walk and if you have bikes brilliant for some mountain biking.
Even if you just rocked up and walked around doing nothing im sure youd have a wonderful time, just dress appropriately.0
