Lake District

Hi all.
My girlfriend and I are planning to go to the lake district for a weekend.
We've never been away before, what's the best way to find places to sleep? Ideally we'd want a cottage but it may be slightly more than we wanted to pay. All we want is somewhere quiet where we can just chill.
What's the cheapest way to have a good time in the lake district? Any recommendations welcome!

What sort of budget did you have in mind ?
The lake district is very beautiful, as you can see from pictures, but the only time I've actually been it poured with rain the entire weekend and as a result was one of the most miserable breaks I've ever had.
I'm not sure how unlucky we were getting a rainy weekend, but in my experience you really need good weather or a great place to stay so that you don't care if the weathers bad.0 -
St bees is lovely and has some good and cheap BNB'S.
Buttermere is beautiful but the hotels there can be pricey especially near the park.Britain is great but Manchester is greater0 -
We stayed not far from Grasmere in a cottage as a family - however, I would recommend to be prepared clothes wise for all eventualities rain / shine / in between. Do you really want to chill / nothing around, or perhaps a b&b in a village area with a couple of pubs / places to eat within walking distance?
We had one pub across the road and an hour round trip for a bottle of ketchup where we stayed.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

I'd suggest looking for self-catering accommodation on Trip Advisor, as there are reviews that you can check before booking. As it is prone to rain, it might be an idea to say somewhere with some nice pubs and shops to browse, such as Ambleside or Windermere.
There cheapest time to have a good time is probably to walk or mountain bike around, as the scenery is amazing. You can also do a range of water sports and boat trips, of varying costs.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
If the weather stays like it currently is, bring LOTS of sunscreen - its gorgeous.0

Thanks for all the helpful replies!
Budget is around £200 per person, but that includes petrol to and from the Midlands so probably around £165 each to cover accommodation, food plus anything we'd like to do.
Most likely going to go up Saturday morning, spend the day walking round / exploring (maybe a boat trip / watersports depending on price / weather) then have a nice meal on the night.
Sunday we were thinking of going on a drive, can anyone recommend any nice roads to drive on?
We'd probably want somewhere with a few pubs around and shops so will check out the villages you guys have suggested, thanks once again!0 -

£330 to cover accommodation, food and entertainment - I think you'll be lucky!
By the way, if what you want to do is go shopping, the Lake District may not be your ideal location.;)0 -

Have a look at the Masons Arms
It has a stunning, rural location and you'll have a lovely chillax -- a bowl of ribs on the outdoor terrace with a pint (or 4) of Cumbrian beer. Happy, happy times. & some nice roads to it as well.
Lots of outdoor clothing shops, but the Lakes isn't really a shopping hotspot (you need to take some Mint Cake home with you. All are good, but Wilsons is my favourite).0 -

I thought around £150 for accommodation (with breakfast?), then say lunch on the Saturday, Dinner on the Saturday and Lunch on the Sunday, £60 should be plenty for this?
This would leave £120 for drinks and anything else we wanted to do! By shopping, I meant local village shops, but these aren't a necessity!
Both of our first times booking a holiday so please feel free to tell me if I've missed anything or am way out with my prices haha!Murphy_The_Cat wrote: »Have a look at the Masons Arms

Will check that out! Didn't really want a shopping hotspot anyway0 -
I'm just back from the lakes. You'll need to find a BnB but you can do it for i would say £170 with breakfast both mornings.
You will need more money imo for drinks and food, it's around £7 for a cocktail. We were at the lakes this weekend and spent £120 on drinks alone and about £100 on food for 2 days x0
