Advice please newbie

Hi just had a letter from the bank saying they sold our credit card to a debt collecter having no recollection of having a credit card we rang the bank, turns out it is ours from 2007 we have had no statements it's not on our online banking and we have twice been to bank manager about mortgages and they have never mention it we just looked on our credit score and it is in their but closed what really annoying is the bank has suspended our accounts where do we stand on this genuinely we have forgotten about this card and obv they did as we have had nothing in correspondence we bank and have our mortgage with this bank ( natwest ) I'm at the point I'm gonna change and cancel all my dd and close the accounts :mad:any help would be appreciated the bank is ringing us back as they are looking into the lack of contact

    Who does the credit card belong to?
    It cannot be 'ours' as credit cards are in sole names only. Who signed the contract? Who has it showing on their CR?
    What does it show on the CR? late payments? defaults?

    You will have individual log in details for your internet banking along with individual credit reports. Is it possible that you are using log in details for one person and not the other who may have the credit card showing. With some banks credit cards disappear from internet banking when they are not paid anyway but if you have never seen it I would wonder why as per the individual log in details.

    Have they confirmed they didn't contact you or is there any reason they may not have been able to contact you eg - change of address? or have you opted for paperless correspondence?

  • It's my partners so in his name but our accounts with the bank are joint as is the mortgage it's just shows on his credit check form as closed they are aware of no correspondence as they said they'd ring back yet haven't yet after investigating we lived at the same address for 15 years we now remember he had a credit card when we change to them for the mortgage but was certain it was paid back ( going to look into it ) it was closed 5 years ago on the credit form

    When you log into internet banking, who's name is on the personal details?

    It could be that you have been logging into your details, not his and therefore have never seen/noticed it. If it is showing as closed, it wouldn't be there now anyway.

    Even though your accounts are all joint, you will still have individual log in details the same as you have an individual card for the joint account. If either of you wanted to open a sole account it would then be detailed on that persons internet banking but not on the other persons, like the CC would have.

    Have the bank said they are suspending your accounts?
    If yes -
    What type of wording have they used?
    Have they told you what your next steps need to be? ie did they tell you to make alternative banking arrangements?

    If no -
    How do you know they have been suspended?

    I would be tempted to open another account elsewhere anyway. It's always good to have a back up account.
