I think traditionally it was on the birth of the first child, however with many people now waiting longer to start a family, it is often on the 1st wedding anniversary. Also in days gone by a lot of people didn't have engagement rings as they simply couldn't afford them, so more importance was attached to the eternity ring than to the engagement ring.

  • We got married in May with our 6 month old daughter a bridesmaid.

Guess it'll have to be the 1st anniversary. Any particular type of ring?

My first wedding anniversary came and went a few months ago without any sign of rings. And I'm guessing that when I give birth next month there won't be any sign of rings either, but then, who can afford jewellery after kitting a baby out?

PS I've just remembered something, hubby was suggesting last weekend (I'm amazed I didn't hit him) that I sell my engagement ring, so I can get an eternity ring!! Apart from anything else the re-sell value of used jewellery wouldn't buy a ring-pull!

  • I have heard its the birth if your first child or your first years wedding anniversary whichever comes first. I have been married a year now with no eternity ring will have to wait until we have a child then. I have dropped loads of hints though.

Well, yes, traditionally you got one at first anniversary or birth of first child, whichever was soonest. I waited a lot longer, but ended up with a beautiful emerald one, much nicer than we could have bought while paying childcare for a little one!

My OH is a goldsmith and he made me a 1/2 Eternity ring and gave it to me when our DD was born. As part of his training he studied the history behind precious jewellery etc and says there is no tradition to ternity rings but jewellers tell you there is to make more sales:D . A proper eternity ring is a full band of stones, but they are hard to adjust if you get the sizing wrong. More popular are 1/2 eternity ring with just a row of 5-8 stones.
