Thanks... did anyone else feel that they were just stuck in an endless loop and just got put pack to the initial point of contact (who couldn't help) over and over and over again?
I so hope I never have to call them again. It's damaging to my mental health!

This sums it up for me! I read your words and that is exactly what is happening to me. I ordered my new connection (new-build house) over 4 weeks before I moved, was given an appointment for an engineer to come on the day I moved and saw no sign of anyone & no explanation. Have since spoken to so many different people that I despair every time I see a BT van. My broadband order has also been cancelled by BT for no reason that I can fathom. I'm not going to reinstate it now - I will use another provider because I just can't take this hassle.
I did eventually get through to someone on Monday, after waiting more than 20 minutes, and she made an appointment for next Monday, in the morning. Today the letter arrived confirming that the appointment is in the AFTERNOON - exactly when I told them I just couldn't be there. I 'phoned this morning (25 mins. in queue) and was told that I can't now have an appointment until 22 October. I will have been without a landline for 3 weeks and I work from home a lot.

I will definitely be complaining and will contact my MP. There are lots of new homes in this area, and being without a 'phone for prolonged periods could well have a negative impact on people who work from home or run small businesses from home.

Of course the line in my old house was disconnected on the day they said - 4 hours early!!

GRRRR!! It does make me mad!

At least we all know they're not just picking on us!

Sympathies. I went to the director of complaints' office in the end (number on this thread somewhere). It was sorted out really quickly after that, with a month free line rental as compensation.

I also rang the director of complaints office twice and was told would get a callback which of course I havent had, So today I came across the e-mail address of the chairman which someone had posted on a different board. I have had a reply from the chairman saying he will get his high level complaints team on the case

It was so 'nice' (for want of a better word) to hear of peoples problems with BT. Having been a customer for over 15 years with BT, I can honestly say that over the last couple of years, their service has declined to incompetency beyond compare
They are impossible to get on the phone, if you are lucky to get an operator at all and not an automated message, and e-mailing is totally ineffective too. I am still waiting for a reply from an e-mail sent 3 months ago! Imagine if we were that 'efficient' when paying our bills!
Maybe we should charge BT £5 late answering fees??

Anyway...less of the ranting and onto my main question....... I FINALLY found out my contract HAD expired with BT for my Internet and phone package so am looking to change my provider - hurray!!!!!:D
Are there any good deals around at the moment and does any-one recommend their providers please?
    Many thanks!
:A Thank you to all who post xxx :A
  • I have been trying to get through to BT for ages but I just end up sitting on hold for hours. Several times I have been on hold for so long that the automated voice then tells me that they are closed!

Having tried to pay my bill on the automated telephone system it keeps telling me that my card details are incorrect and to call them - what a joke!!!! So then I set up an online account but that just tells me that there is an error and i should call them!! I don't own a cheque book and the nearest post office is miles away and I can't even get hold of somebody to set up a direct debit.
Any way our phone has now been cut off and although I manage to speak to somebody they can never seem to help and just put me through to the 'never answer the phone department.'

Thanks for the complaints office number I think I will try them next.

I've not got a phoneline. Moved into a flat and last tenant had one. The socket is here. I know the number, dialled it and it says "this line is not accepting inbound calls", so I figure it must be easy to make it live.

Trying to phone them on a PAYG mobile phone ... very pricey.

After reading this I think I might go find a public phone, at least the calls will be free then

    Is there a dial tone?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Bloomin' heck. Just gave it one more go.
    0800 800 150

Had to know/type in the existing phone number during the automated call process (which I cheekily knew by opening the last tenant's mail ... OK, I know that's wrong but I was desperate!)

Got connected to somebody pretty quickly. No charge to reconnect the line for me as the new tenant.

Should be on within 2 days.

I will update this thread if anything changes from that.... but looks like I'll have a landline soon. Then I can get broadband next.

No idea. I don't have a phone handset yet.
I wasn't planning on using the phoneline to be honest. I just want broadband.
    I don't make phone calls much/usually/generally
