What is an approved cabin case? I wasn't aware that there was an approved size across the industry

There's a current IATA standard and a future IATA suggested standard for placing the bag on edge in the overhead locker, if spending a lot I'd look at the future IATA standard and the Ryanair 20cm smaller size.

If you tend to travel by plane, weight is important. You need to decide between hard shell, which tends to be tougher but is almost impossible to repair and soft shell (ducktape goes a long way to cover cuts).

Four wheelers have small wheels sticking out, which reduces the inner dimensions of the luggage and makes them prone to come off it hit hard. I prefer two wheelers with bigger wheels suspended in the shell, like the Samsonite B-Lite series. For sturdy hard shell luggage, check Rimowa, I have used them for years, and still prefer the old "Classic Flight" alloy cases, relatively heavy (when compared to the modern polycarbonate cases), but prettier.

Of course you're right to question/comment photome. I took the smallest size into account when buying my luggage especially as Flybe (with one of the smallest allowable sizes) flies out of my local airport and I'm likely to use them when possible.

This just demonstrates that it's 'horses for courses' in your choice of luggage but it's useful for all posters to read the choices people make and why.

Personally I don't want a heavy case so I look for one that weighs as little as possible before I put my belongings into it. That's partly because I'm paying for the weight but also because as I get older and more infirm;) the manoeuvrability of the 4 wheels matters.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I always buy Tripp luggage from Debenhams, and my latest purchase was a four wheeler which I've used several times. Love it. Much better than a two wheeler.
