What I don't understand is why the messages from 'the other side', given by the mediums and psychic are so mundane, like, 'auntie Doris's false teeth are down the back of the sofa'
If there is "another side" I will spend my afterlife approaching mediums and singing Wuthering Heights to their audiences.
Why do the spirits of famous people from history never come through? Why can't we ask Charles Dickens how he intended his final (unfinished) novel to end for example? They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -
On the contrary, there has never been any credible instance of contact with the dead. The clue is in the word 'dead'. The point of mediums is to make money, they are all frauds. Watch the Derren Brown link on YouTube and you will see how it is all done. It is often worse than just a scam, it's a very cruel trick played on the bereaved and vulnerable.
I think it is far more sad that some people do accept the concept of life after death as there has never been a scrap of evidence for it. Charlatans have been preying on the gullible for centuries. It is really down to being unable to accept the finality of death. Once you do that you can actually live your life to the full without worrying about a mythical next one. That is far more liberating as a concept.
I think it is sad that you dismiss totally other people's views on death.
You are entitled to your opinion but you do NOT know for certain that there is no life after death.
I believe totally that there is and have reasons for my belief. I am not going to give them on here though so they can be mocked. Why is it that people that believe in God, life after death or whatever can accept that not everyone shares their beliefs and yet non believers not only cannot accept it they also have to be rude and mock the believers?Psychics tell no one anything but total BS.
There is no "Other Side". Heaven and Hell are what we make of life on this planet.
I look forward to the day when the whole human race realises this and finally gives up the delusion that there is a Deity Up There Somewhere.
Standing by for the stoning now...
I think you are totally entitled to your views but, again, you have no certainty that there is no "other side".
I don't honestly care what people think of my beliefs but I do wish people would be a bit more accepting of other's views and not be so quick to be rudeThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
It's not that I want to believe blindly but there are things she has said about me that there really aren't reasonable explanations for.
you underestimate the gossip-mongers.. I have had people ask me about things I have only ever discussed with one person who they didnt even know..
I have my facebook in total lockdown yet stuff I have 'planted' on there has been back to my abusive ex within a week.. A collection of people who don't know him, yet it gets there.. how? Not divine intervention thats for sure! .. just blabber mouths.
It only takes one person to see you .. this is how rumours are started.
I'd be more inclined to look at mutual friends/family members and see who is giving this woman the information.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Science isn't about opinions, it's about verifiable facts.
I don't believe that there isn't a monster under my bed: I can provide proof that there isn't and I have no proof that there is. The same works for God and psychics.
If there is a life after death, where is the proof? If no proof is needed because we can believe in whatever makes us feel better then I vote for the afterlife being very like the Appenines with pizza and ice cream available at all times.
You can't prove it isn't.0 -

Reasons for belief never actually amount to more than faith, which is by definition the belief in something without proof. I have deliberately avoided being 'rude' about beliefs, and questioning and disputing these ideas is acceptable in any free society. There is no 'special status' for any form of belief or lack of it.
In my experience believers are generally far more intolerant of non-belief and invariably play the 'offended' card rather than enter into a discussion. Non-belief is routinely subjected to insult and discrimination on this basis. Your post actually demonstrates that as you have made personal comments, whereas I have made none.
The point of this thread was actually more specific, regarding communication with dead people. It is not 'rude' to point out that every practitioner of this dark art is a charlatan and a conman, it is plain fact. However, if people wish to continue to be conned in any walk of life, despite the evidence, it is difficult to stop them.:dance:We're gonna be alright, dancin' on a Saturday night:dance:0 -

You can't prove it isn't.
You can believe in whatever you like. It doesn't bother or affect me in any way.
I just don't like the fact that because I believe in God and an afterlife it is somehow ok to mock me.Ok, let's turn that on its head. An atheist absolutely knows that there is nothing after death, just as strongly than you do that there is. You are therefore dismissing my views just as I am dismissing yours. I would say it is 'sad' that you dismiss the logical conclusion of it all. The difference is that there has never been a shred of evidence for what you claim, and that nothing has ever disproved what I am saying. I also dismiss the idea that there is no proof for the atheist viewpoint, since it is incumbent on those making any claim to prove it, not for others to disprove it. I refer you to the Flying Spaghetti Monster here.

I totally disagree. I have found most believers to be far more tolerant. On the whole accepting that everyone has a different view and that many people do not believe in any God or any religion. Non believers on the other hand are so quick to say that there is definitely not a God or, as so may like to refer to, a sky fairy.
I don't go around telling people there is definitely a God, definitely an afterlife. I believe totally in them but I don't expect others to. You stated that you know for sure there is no God or afterlife and that all mediums are liars, con artists etc. I disagree but I am not on here shouting that some are genuine. I believe what I believe but I don't mock others who don't feel the same way.
There would be no point whatsoever in entering into a "discussion" because most people either believe or don't believe. What is ever going to be said on here that would honestly change someone's view or belief?
As I said, I have reasons why I believe, especially in an afterlife but I am never in a million years going to give those reasons on here so that I can be ridiculed as I know I would beThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

Even if I wasn't completely sceptical about psychics anyway, I have a personal experience that probably comes as close to the impossible 'proof they don't exist' as any believer would accept.
I had a friend who completely bought into the whole medium/psychic/paranormal/ghosts etc. rubbish. Totally believed it, hook line and sinker. Thought her house was haunted and got a priest in even though her family had bought it as a new build! We used to argue for hours on the topic, she'd tell me all sorts of stories about slamming doors and mysterious moving objects and I'd be incredulous that an otherwise intelligent woman kept shelling out cash to psychics to be told she'd meet a men with 'J' in his name.
She died nearly 10 years ago now. Not a peep. No messages, no friendly psychics turning up at my door, no visitations, nothing. I know why, its because she's dead, and that's what happens when you're dead, you don't exist anymore. But if you do believe even for a second that the dead can communicate with the living then there's no way this person wouldn't have taken the chance to gloat and prove me wrong!0 -
I think there's plenty of scope for belief, if you want to.
I also know from observation that most people should not be allowed near a poker deck let alone a 'psychic' - it is not difficult to 'read' reactions to a nice wide open suggestion.
I regret you're suffering, OP, and urge you to love your niece anyway, stick to the truth you know & let her hang onto what she thinks - noone in the family alive or dead benefits from you two both unhappy.0 -
It is sad that these charlatans are able to prey on the suffering, hopeful and/or deluded.0
