British Gas Central Heating Quotation - £3700

  • We had what sounds like a very similar replacement done by British Gas about 2 months ago. They pulled out the old water tanks, fitted a new boiler (which involved knocking a new hole through for the flue and bricking up the old one), and flushed the system. We paid £3,300 for this (should have been 3,700 but there was some kind of extra discount available at the time we ordered).
They were very quick and very neat, the entire thing being done in a day. I'm aware you can get the work done for less, but if you don't know somebody personally then I think there's something to be said for going with a big company. OK, you pay over the odds but you've got comebacks in case something goes wrong with the installation and a guarantee that actually means something afterwards.
Actually, I think I recall Powergen offering a 3/5 year guarantee on their installations...

I was quoted yesterday £4000 (minus £400 for their latest offers) to have a new boiler and have it resited. The deatilaed quote showed they wanted £2550 for a Worcester Greenstar 28i, which costs just £800 inc vat online. Also the rest of their materials (i.e. flue kit) were vastly overpriced.

No way am I going to pay BG over £2000 just for peace of mind - they're no better than anyone else and use the same boilers.

    £4000

I have been through all this in last two weeks.

I have bought my own BAXI boiler with flue kit etc and cost me only 700 inc vat from local plumbing shop in stoke on trent and picked up few plumbers (corgi reg) cards in the same shop. called one of them and for £200 he fixed it for me within a week.
    total cost just under £900.

Baxi came with one year guarantee.
and after a year I might consider to get a BG boiler breakdown cover:p.
  • hi,

baxi boilers are not very good!! go with vaillant, viessman or wocester!

3700 is too much for that quote!

british gas work is NOT very good in most cases!

get a local plumber to quote and request some recommendations!

i'm shocked that a corgi plumber would install someones boiler that they purchased themselves. its a joke in my opinion that corgi charge installs + £250 a year membership plus various other charges YET members of the public are allowed to buy gas kit without corgi cards.

corgi yet again are a waste of money to the trade they are there to protect.

Good morning: £200 is incredibly cheap and makes me wonder if the installation meets Building regs.!! Hope you get your Building Regs. Compliance certificate in the post soon.Did your installer complete the Benchmark log book (installation and service record)? Baxi won't be happy if the installation doesn't meet requirements i.e. invalidates warranty. Hi all,

Some advice needed if at all possible my mum is getting a new boiler put, but we are a bit unsure as to whether the quotes we have recieved are good or not along with the fact if the boilers are either.

    British Gas
Worcester Greenstar 28i Junior, flue kit, radiator valves, system flush, earth bonding, take out old gas fire, remove back boiler, remove water tank from loft etc, with 1 years free servicing for £4320. The sales guy did advise that this cost will come down with the discounts etc (not by that much)

    Glo-Warm
Flexicom 24CX again with more or less the same as what British Gas advised they would do radiator valves etc. 2 Years free servicing for £3330

Now my mum still has Servo-warm coming round, but going by this what is the general opinion on price and boilers.
I tried looking for a few reviews and most people i speak with suggest that the Worcester is the better model.

I am currently battling with British Gas on a new boiler.

They came out last year and gave me what they called a quotation. It listed all the items needed plus labour and gave me a total of £2800.

I contacted them that I regarded what they gave to me as an estimate and I wanted a fully itemised quotation, listing what each item cost. So far they have been unwilling to provide this, claiming that the quote they gave me is the best they can do.

I have today written a formal complaint on this matter - I would like a new boiler, but BG's intransigance is astounding.

I have a pretty good idea that they are seriously overcharging - looking around at retail prices for boilers etc means that I think they want to charge me around £1200 for labour for one day's work.

    I will keep you posted

It's immaterial what any gas engineer charges for individual parts and labour.

All you have to look at is the final price that you have to pay.

Possibly, but if I am going to get a new boiler I want to know how how much they contractor wants to charge me for the boiler and how much they want to charge for labour.
