British Gas Central Heating Quotation - £3700

Afternoon all,

I have been quoted £3700 for a new central heating and hot water system, would anybody in the know kindly let me know if it is reasonable and what the British Gas installation service is like. I realise BG are that bit more expensive than others but i am happy to pay a premium for a quality service, though I do not want to be ripped of. Details of quote bellow.

1910 end terraced house - 3 bedrooms. Currently we have a central heating boiler in the cellar and a hot water heater in the bathroom, above the bath!

The BG quote is for a Baxi Duo Tech 28HE combi condensing boiler. Pump and flue, the boiler is going in the cellar to avoid any disruption to rooms as very little places to put it. The quote does not include any radiators etc, but includes all the additional extras such as removing the previous 2 boilers, remedial brick work, bricking up a cellar window to place the new boiler, Powerflush, some ME bonding, magnetic filter???, new controls etc.

Can anybody confirm it is reasonable, or did they see me coming?

  • You can normally expect to pay around half to two thirds what British Gas quote. I think my husband would probably charge around 1900 + vat. (based in Essex).

That's not too bad for a BG conversion quote. Especially as it includes a fair bit of building work.

Remember that you spoke to a salesman and not an engineer and it will not be him who is doing the work.

The gentleman that came was very helpful, I don't feel I got any real sales push from him, ex engineer who had recently swapped to sales.

He seemed to know his stuff, not that I can say that with any real confidence since I know nothing.

Reckoned they could do it in one day with everybody visiting at once, only additinal work in advance was bricking up the cellar window to acomodate the new bolier.

Forgot to mention that the actual cost was more like £4200 but they gave me a 300 discount on a promotion and then another 20 as a valued customer, even though I only signe dup to homecare 10 days ago. I also get free homecare for a year which saves me £17 a month I think.

I got pretty similar to you minus minor building work for £1700 and they took out an old baxi boiler from fireplace. Also done in 2 dayd which for one guy on his own I was very happy with. No problems and happy at the temperature and amount of hot water we have.

  • Hi I recently had a visit from a British Gas Boiler sales man for a similar job ie replacing the boiler in the same location I was quoted £3746.

The quote was a complete joke in my opinion, £1300 for a bolier you can buy online for approx £700, £155 for a flue costing £40. To be honest I was left pretty disgusted with good old BS. I actually asked them before they sent an salesman for a rough estimate which then could do but of course refused too.

    Thanks

£3700 seems to be British Gas's standard quote.

My parents had new condenser boiler fitted 2-3 years ago by BG and this was their exact quote. They're now on a £300+ a year service contract as they've had no end of trouble with it. So much so they daren't take it off the contract cos they made such a mess off the installation. They never flushed the radiators and their new boiler packed in and had to be replaced within a couple of months.

Coincidentaly, they've had engineers in every day this week replacing more parts as it still isn't right (They're back tomorow to replace more parts) - AND they've just charged em £150 to have a magnetic filter fitted which they said they must have, but isn't covered by the maintenance contract.

My boss at work has just had them in to replace his central heating system a couple of months ago, and guess what? His quote was also exactly £3700.

Get some other quotes, British Gas IMO are cowboys.
  • A customer of mine paid over 5 grand for a combi boiler and 2 rads yes, just 2 rads one in the hall and one in the bathroom. I did try to talk them out of it as I said I could do it for easy half that, but because they were short of funds and british gas could organise credit/loan, they declined my offer. They now have to pay off this huge debt they have now incurred. IMO they should have got a loan from someone like lombards. Funny thing is I went back recently to fit a rad in the lounge as they were heating this by an electric fire. What a waste.

Seems a lot to me. We're having our old back boiler and tank system ripped out, and a worcester combi re sited, 5 rads and towel rail fitted in bathroom for £2,250.
