More than happy to pay a sitter (cat for me) min wage (Or more) for the hours worked - IF they're also registered for tax and NI purposes.

If it's an undeclared second income, that's different and will come down to what I think their service is worth/what they'll accept.

That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Daily Mail story, so best taken with a pinch of salt, but yes it does amaze me how 'some parents' begrudge using a babysitting service..!

There is a simple answer to this. If you don't believe the babysitter is worth minimum wage then don't use their services and either stay in or leave your children alone. Won't do either? Then pay up and stop complaining.

No.. £15 for a whole evening maybe.. And in the article she paid £6 and hour and the sitter requested it go up to £7.20 an hour which is just over half what you are claiming..

But I wouldnt get a sitter anyway.. my sofa would miss me.

Some do sitting as a business and would have to pay tax on their earnings so it is only fair to pay them at least minimum wage, but a friends teen doing a favour once a month or every 6 months.. nah.. you'll get a pre-agreed amount.

If I had to pay £7.20/hour, then they certainly wouldnt just be watching TV. At that price I would leave them a mountain of ironing!!!

I used to earn £10 an evening looking after 4 kids for 5 hours!! (1996). I was happy at that price as once they were in bed I could do my homework!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Why is MSE promoting a Daily Mail story promoting Munsnet? If I wanted to read the DM or Mumsnet I would.

A person would need a different type of insurance for housework to the one they need to hire a paid babysitter.
