Why is MSE promoting a Daily Mail story promoting Munsnet? If I wanted to read the DM or Mumsnet I would.

Surely you are not paying a babysitter to watch tv but are paying for the peace of mind knowing there is somebody there in case there is an emergency. If you are not confident in their abilities, you have the wrong babysitter.

A person would need a different type of insurance for housework to the one they need to hire a paid babysitter.

I wouldn't expect either of them to have insurance.

I last babysat when I was about 15, think I got a tenner for the evening. What's NMW for 15 year olds?

So these sitters are looking after your very precious items and min wage at least is beyond you?
In my case now as the kids are grown, I need a dog sitter on occasions. I pay them for hourly walks at a tenner per dog.
Overnights are considerably more at 40 per dog per night which is not min wage but I don't expect they are walked for 24 hours either😄
When it was the kids I would either pay what they asked or not go out (many many times I didn't go out)
    63 mortgage payments to go.

The person who you are trusting to look after you child(ren) and act correctly and suitably if they are unwell or anything potentially dangerous happens? It's a big responsibility and I wouldn't expect anybody to do that for less than minimum wage as their job. Far from it.

I could understand if it's a friend or relative as a favour it might be a different case but it's still a big ask if it's on a regular basis.

£3.87 for 16-17 year olds, unsure about 15.

From what I've seen that's actually about average for a professional, insured pet sitter over-night, and some charge more than that.

I'd leave a dog home alone overnight.. its a dog.. not a child! Dogs and children are not the same. I wouldnt think twice about going out and leaving a dog or cat for an evening.

dog walkers here charge about £8 an hour.. childminders are double that at least.. as they should be.. responsibility for another human is a far bigger deal than an animal.
