What do to with Aqua card

Hi,

I've moved to the UK in September last year and planned on working my credit history as soon as possible. As such, I applied and was given an Aqua start card with a 100 pounds limit and a horrendous 70% APR. Since December, when I got the card, I made all the payments in full and on time, never went over the 100 pounds limit (how is that even called a credit line?!) and I asked for a limit increase last month. I wasn't offered one and decided to roll the dices and apply for another card. I've used the credit card eligibility tool and was given 80% chances of being approved for an Aqua classic card. I applied and was approved with a 300 pounds credit limit and a normal - yet high - APR.

My question now is this. What am I supposed to do with the 'start' card? Aqua said they are unable to consolidate the two cards into just one, as I can't consolidate a 'start' and a 'classic' card. They also said I am not able to upgrade my 'start' card to a 'classic' and then consolidate, as I had the account for less than one year. Having asked them what I am supposed to do with that card, I was told "it's up to you."

I am afraid to close it, as I already have a thin credit file and closing it would already make me more of a risk to lenders, but on the other hand I wouldn't keep it just hoping Aqua would allow me to upgrade it to a 'classic' in December.

Anybody any thoughts on this matter?

Cheers!

Leave it until you can get something better. Always have a back up.

But keep away from the credit limit this time. They set it low as their customers are higher risk.

What you do with the Start card is telephone Aqua (New Day) and cancel it. You have a Classic so you are unlikely to use the Start card. As you use the Classic card you should be offered regular limit increases but less likely to get those limit increases if you spread spending across two cards.

Surprising though that you have two Aqua cards. I've always been under the impression that only have one Aqua card can be held.

Cancel the start card and use the classic. You only need a single credit card to build a history.

why don't you wait until September, then upgrade and combine the cards as you will have had it a year then.

That history will stay with you and show you have a longer, consistent history of paying your credit commitments.
