Returning a game to Game, refund or store credit?

Ok, here goes. I have purchased a game for my 18 year old son. It was released on 13th May 2016, I bought it brand new (in cellophane) and now it's open. He has put the game in his PS4 which has caused a total meltdown, his PS4 went hot in under 10 minutes, the fan or disc continuously spinning (loudly) and gameplay is so unbelievably laggy that it's unplayable. Now he doesn't want to play it (not because it's unplayable) because he worries it may cause his PS4 (which is only 6-7 months old) to breakdown.
He has tried all other games, digital and physical copies which are not causing any of these issues at all. What are my rights with this type of problem? I have the receipt here for the game (£49.99) should I get a refund, replacement or preferably store credit as he would like to buy a different game/games. He is worried that thus game will be the death of his console.
Thank you for your time and answers 😃

Why not take it back and ask for a replacement as the disc seems to be faulty but be aware they may want to try it out instore themselves.0

Whats the game ?
Have you had a look if anyone else has reported the same issue ?
At a guess I'd say it was the new Doom game, can't see it being the Disney game.
Does the ps4 have good ventilation ?0 -

My games collection is made up of physical and digital copies, all purchased legitimately, I'd expect the OP's son is the same.0 -

What the OP has said is digital and games in disc format eg original games bought have been tried.
You have misunderstood what's been said.
Buy a digital or physical version of a game from various outlets.0 -
