Do all SMETS2  smart meters work with Octopus Energy or are there some which are problematic?

What Smart meters do Octopus Energy install themselves or does it vary depending on what part of the country you are in?

They can automatically read all second generation (SMETS2)
Octopus sometimes install S/M themselves/third party install
  • As I suggested, go to the Logicor Energy and enter the property address and you should see something like this:
(as I understand it they get the meter type directly from the National Database)

Looks like the house I'm moving to still has a traditional meter.  At least I now know that now.  Thanks for all the info :)

With all the interesting comments on smart meters and how many there are, does it in fact make any difference which one the Octopus engineer actually selects and installs?  I believe that my new one is a SMETS2 Chameleon 2020. Do they in effect all do the same thing regardless?
Mine shows daytime Usage Now of 0 kWh (with just the PC and router switched on) but this leaped to 239 W in the early morning with everything switched off. I am baffled how to account for this.

Chameleon does not make smart meters. All SMETS2 meters work to a common standard. They have to be approved before they can be connected to the secure DCC managed network. All firmware changes have to tested in the DCC labs before they can be deployed. Octopus installs various SMETS2 meters. They use their own installer teams or a third party such as Energise. A key part of the installation process is the commissioning of the meter. Octopus has full visibility of this process. If you have concerns, you can email smart@octopus.energy

Chameleon make the IHD that appears to causing you so much concern.

I don't believe I have any particular concerns with the Chameleon meter other than getting to understand what it can / cannot do before and after it gets fully connected up. It is unclear if the present early state qualifies as being "commissioned", or if that has yet to come when the website "recognizes" the meter. And I get switched to Go Faster.
For Energise read SME in my circumstances who in turn contracted with a local fitter to do the job.

  • Chameleon do not manufacture smart meters. Their expertise lies in producing In House Displays (IHDs) which connect to your smart meter communications club via a Home Area Network (the HAN).

You can see whether your smart meters are transmitting data by signing up for an account with N3rgy.com. Use the ‘I am consumer’ link. You will need your MPAN and the number off the bottom of your IHD.

It can take a few days for Octopus to fully commission your meters. They have to send out security certificates to your meters. Octopus will not transfer you to Go Faster until they have received a few days of 30 minute data.

Thanks the bits are ever so slowly falling  into place. I will follow your tip about N3rgy.com. It sounds like the transfer to GF is not a quick and easy instant event. Is the requirement for getting 30 minute data the reason for, as I was once told, me having to access GF via Go, and not without passing Go, or are the two not connected?

Sam, the smart meter is the meter that has replaced your old meter next to the  main fuse of your house. The ihd is the thing you plug in which gives readings in your house.....the ihd is NOT your smart meter. The ihd is made by chameleon. Your smart meter will be one of a landis and gyr, or kaifa or edmi brand, depending on who installed it for octoous.

Once your smart meter fully goes online you will realise what we are talking about with regards to what data is available about your usage. Your online account updates daily on the exact usage for the previous day. It is nothing like your current set up with tracker.

With regards to people asking about smart meters and how it works with octopus.

If you have a smets2 meter and are switching to octopus then they will be able to get smart reading from it.

If you have a smets1 meter then they may be able to get readings from it, if your meter has been upgraded remotely to the dcc. If it hasn't and they can't get readings you have two options, you can either wait till it gets upgraded or you can ask octopus to change your smart meter to the latest smets2 ones, which they will do free of charge. Hope that helps.

The requirement for 30-minute readings applies to any ToU tariff so that Octopus can bill you correctly for the amount of energy you used at each rate. It's not the reason you have to have Go before a Go Faster tariff (I don't know why they make you do that).

I'm guessing: Tracker is innovative but not truly ToU. They need ToU data as a basis for switching me to Go Faster which is what they can only now get from the new smart meter. Pure speculation on my part.  But I don't see why they can't use the data as it is now generated in real time. I have selected my preferred time-slot. Someone can enlighten us.
