Housing benefit ...worried sick

  • Your son might like to make a retrospective claim for Discretionary Housing Benefit for the shortfall that has occurred - no guarantee it will be awarded. https://www.thanet.gov.uk/your-services/benefits/discretionary-housing-payments/discretionary-housing-payments-guidance/ If you don't ask you don't get.

Thank you. I will try that. But I'm not entitled to anything....I'm going to have to think hard.

But thank you for helping me understand what's happened. If he gets middle rate dla and support group ESA, will he be entitled to the SDP.

I think I read he is..... I'm feeling overwhelmed with information
    Kindness costs nothing :)
  • Once he gets the 1 bedroom rate he could then qualify for the 2 bedroom rate if he has a regular overnight carer and moves into a 2 bedroom property!

Could your husband claim Working Tax Credits?
Do you rent? If so, could you claim HB. Or Council Tax support?

Your son could pass the additional payment he will receive for the SDP on to you, by way of covering some of your expenses in caring for him?

Benefit Check at your local CAB, or online at Turn2us, or entitled to.

That's interesting, I can not thank you enough.

So in order tomorrow I should...

Phone housing benefit to confirm this is the problem.
    Cancel my carers allowance.
Help my son apply for SDP.
Then let housing know he's on SDP....to upgrade

I'm not sure if we would be entitled to working tax credits, but I will check on those web sites, thank you for the information.
I'm amazed how helpful you've all been, where would we be without people like you?
    I don't know X

The Severe Disability Premium isn't the only thing that exempts you from shared accommodation rate.

    http://england.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/housing_benefit_and_local_housing_allowance/what_is_housing_benefit/housing_benefit_if_you_are_under_35

''Housing benefit if you have a disability
If you are disabled, the shared accommodation rate won't apply if you:

need overnight care and no gets carer's allowance for looking after you
receive the middle or high rate of disability living allowance
get the daily living component of a personal independent payment (PIP) or the armed forces independence payment'

Please do make sure you look into this before giving up your (hard earned!) carer's allowance. Best of luck x

Someone receiving Carers Allowance stops 1 bedroom LHA rate from being used irrespective of the DLA or PIP award.

I know Asperger's syndrome isn't in the DSM-5 anymore but I thought under the old criteria having Asperger's pretty much cancels out having learning disabilities because Asperger's syndrome is considered high functioning Autism meaning a person's IQ is over 70. If he has learning difficulties its a different matter.
