FWIW, it recognises the disc, shows it as a 'Bad Disk', but doesn't allow any operations upon it.

Select any other partition/volume on the machine, and the available options show up at top of screen - Copy, Delete, etc. Select the disk I want to work with, and they disappear. They're all greyed out in the Menu options, too......

Further FWIW for anyone attempting same - none of the available four 'wizards' in Minitool Partition Wizard will do anything with it.

    1. Migrate OS to HDD prompts that it can't complete because C: is in use, and prompts to restart PC - then fails after system restart with Error 23

    2. Copy Partition will only copy a partition to unallocated space, and the drive concerned has none

    3. Copy disk fails for same reason as 2.

    4. Partition Recovery ..... is currently scanning all the sectors on the disc, but may be a while, since it's not even 1% through..... so there's hope there, but later ...

umm , you seem to be using the program not for the reason I suggested.

I am on another machine , so can only go from memory

select partition on target drive , then select delete , do this with all partitions on target drive

    then press the "apply" button

when done right click on the drive or use menu at top , select new , follow instructions then press apply

you will then have a new ntfs or whatever drive

PS: running via USB will perform slow , had you have placed the drive into your machine you would have been at maybe 4% now

Ummm, thought I made that clear at #8 - when I select the target drive, the Delete option is not available. It's not in the graphics at the top of the screen, and it's greyed out in menu options.

There's only four options available - the four Wizards I listed.

ok , apart from my previous suggestion of connecting the drive directly (internally) , I cannot offer any more advice .

I have a cctv PVR thing here , this formats disks into 4 equal partitions , probably Linux , I often "borrow" the drive and use Mini partition tools to swop it back to ntfs , use it then replace and reformat in the PVR

The only option available through Minitool Partition is to scan the whole disk for 'lost partitions', so I'm waiting for that to finish.

It's been running since just after my last post here, and it's about one-third of the way through.... back in a few days!

It's scanning roughly 1000 sectors per second, but there's 976,773,168 of them ....

Oh dear , if you had used Gparted and then created a new MBR and a new partition sorted. Do you really want to recover the recordings ? If so good luck, if you want to re-use the disk then go back a bit. If the PVR is freeview or Sky you have two hopes , and mine is Bob:cool:

I don't give a stuff about the recordings, all I want to do is reformat it and use it as a backup drive or similar.

Unfortunately, I'm in "I've started, so I'll finish" mode with the current operation, but if that fails, I'll go down the Gparted route

why did yo not try to mount it internally ? , you said you had about 4 sata drives connected , are they all needed to boot windows? , why did you not unplug one and plug this drive in its place?

Sorry fella 36 hours ago he/she could have re-formatted the PVR drive using Gparted / Systemrescuecd. Done that with my old Sky HDD and also for Freeview HDD too. It is a case of a MBR which is not DOS / nor GPT . He/she needs to re-use , Msoft is crap for deciding what a HDD is, use standalone tools 34.5 hours ago finished by now. Keep pushing kodi which works better on none m$soft , open your horizons EF
