You should hear what the German truckers on their CB radios have to say about folks like you. ;)

Especially when you reach a 'no overtaking for trucks' section.

    One can only imagine.........

In Wales a week or so back I saw a truck driver driving less than 2ft away from a BMW Z4 being driven at 35mph in a 60 limit by someone having a late middle aged crisis. It was most frustrating because the tailback was near on 50+ cars and the truck couldn't overtake. At half the speed limit a 2 hour drive becomes a 4 hour drive, it's just ridiculous.

I think if a truck can go that speed, then there's no excuse for driving a car that slowly.

I don't care what "excuses" (because that's what they are) these people use, driving like that is pure incompetence, nothing more, nothing less.

I can think of a couple, engine problems, a flat tyre etc.

No, they're a good excuse to stick your hazard lights on, get as far out of the traffic flow as possible, and stop in the first safe place.

Given that the lorry didn't change lanes I'd assume the post was regards a single carriageway in which case the BMW could have had a run flat issue and thus driving to the recommended speed or maybe his car was in limp mode, neither a reason to stop.

BOTH are every reason to stop. Both merely allow you to get the car to somewhere safe to do so.

Maybe the truckers should spend their time talking to their MPs about changing the speed limits. I don't make them up I just follow them.

I think OP probably did not have a particularly good instructor. When I was a learner, my instructor regularly took me onto the A27,a three lane dual carriageway with slip road. I trained on quiet motorway conditions and regularly drove at 60 on country lanes and 70 on the A27. In fact both of these were on the test route as well.

Two days after my test I had a three hour pass plus lesson from Worthing to the Dartford Crossing and back, and I did my first solo motorway drive the next day.

Motorway driving is probably the safest driving you will ever do. But even when you gain competence and experience, you will have much more traumatic experiences than the one you have described through no fault of your own.

Hang on there a minute Fred -you said you were driving on the autobahn.

Ah - I get it - you must mean the truckers should be campaigning for minimum speed limits for folks like you.

    That's a great idea.

    Vielen Dank.

The maximum speed when towing on the autobahn is 80km/h or 50mph. I don't make the rules up I just follow them.

That's for vehicle and trailer combinations that have not passed the TÜV test.

If you don't present your combo for the test you are stuck with 80kph.

For a one-off trip to Germany I suppose that's fair enough.

Bit of a drag (no pun intended ;)) at that speed though.
