Except this was approx 800m away from a split in the motorway, so OP is in the correct lane, and it kindof isn't an overtaking lane anymore.
So what distance does that start to apply?

If not 1/2 mile, then what about 1 mile? 2 miles? 5 miles?

I'd have said that the lanes started to officially split at the point at which the road markings changed. And that'll be a LOT nearer the actual split than the OP was.

OP is only guilty of not getting back up to speed quickly enough, and has accepted that. Looks like you didn't quite understand the whole thread before replying...

    800m at 50mph takes 35.8 seconds.

You're telling me that in 35.8 seconds, a number of cars have come up behind the OP, flashed and beeped at him, changed lanes, overtaken on the inside and pulled back out?

That doesn't really add up does it?

This is all rather academic as only the OP was there to witness the road conditions. Doing 50 MPH on a motorway where there has been stop/start traffic may be perfectly sensible.

Unfortunately in this day and age people have zero patience, especially behind the wheel and the 10 second or so delay they must have suffered is unforgivable.

I see nothing wrong with doing 50mph on a motorway; 70mph is a maximum not a minimum or average expected of you.

try that on a duel carriageway on your driving test and see if the examiner feels the same (hint, you'd fail...).

That statement says a lot for what you consider appropriate.

All road users should drive with due consideration for others on the road.

And driving at 20 mph under a posted speed limit could hardly be consider considerate on an otherwise empty road.

A lot of lorries are limited to 56mph, aren't they? Are the lorry drivers perpetually driving without due care and attention? Or is it that 6mph that makes the difference?

push bikes are limited to about 5mph if a fat bloke is on it, that doesnt mean its okay for a car to drive 5mph down the A3.

Yes, they are limited, but that 56MPH limit takes into account the performance envelope and presented risk of an (up to) 44T articulated truck. Driving a truck at 70MPH would present a significantly increased risk over a car at 70MPH. Just as 50MPH in a car is really too slow, 70MPH in a truck would be, realistically, too fast - so the limit is set to accommodate that.

If a truck driver, chose to drive at a little over two thirds their mandated limit (ignoring the limiter, 60MPH) like the OP in this example, i.e. 40MPH on a motorway, would you consider that perfectly acceptable?
