Bank Account for a 17 year old

Hello All

My 17 year old has always had a child's account with Natwest which has run well till now but her nearest branch is reducing it's opening hours which will make things difficult for her.

At her age, can she open a bank account which can be run online?

She's thinking of going to uni and I know the banks offer sweeteners to new students - is she better to wait till then?

Thanks
Maureen

Most banks will offer internet access to over 16 year olds.

True and most other banks have branches open at convenient times, unlike Nat West.

If branch is important choose a bank wisely but also consider why you need the branch as many banks let you deposit at post offices.

If it's an adapt account with Natwest, she will be able to register for online banking.

If you/she is looking to find a different bank, this was found on a quick google search http://www.money.co.uk/current-accounts/bank-accounts-for-teenagers.htm

I really think you should be getting her to do the research. At 17 she's old enough to know what she wants and with your guidance should be learning to make these decisions for herself. Particularly is she's planning to go to Uni.

Wait until before she goes to uni, open an account with Barclays, HSBC or Lloyds. Natwest/RBS are a nightmare with branch opening times.

If you want a bank with decent opening times I'd avoid all of the above.
    Try Santander/Halifax/Nationwide.

My local HSBC/RBS/Barclays don't open Saturdays and close at 4pm or 4.30pm and open 10am. My local Nat West is closed on a Wednesday.

My local HSBC and Lloyds are open 09:00 until 18:00 (opens later on Thursday) but then I'm not the middle of nowhere :rotfl:

Son needed a bank account to provide evidence of where he lives & Barclays (despite me having an account with both his & my name on from him being weeks old) required me (or another parent) to attend to open the account.
It's all so much simpler if they already have a driving licence. Face & place in one pass.
  • My daughter has had an account with Santander since she was 14 and has always had online access for the account as well as a debit card.
