Or, on that occasion, she was buying to demonstrate the principle.
Given, you know, it was for TV.
I doubt Ilona would normally visit 4 (or was it 5?) shops in a single day - especially as it said she was most familiar with Tesco.
Plus, given I get the impression from what I've seen and read over the years, Ilona would happily give her last £5 to someone in need, I find your comment a little passive aggressive and mean spirited.
Though I just have had a fairly bad day and could be projecting. That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

You obviously have never read her brilliant blog. She buys what she needs and eats it all. She will cook up a big batch of something, i.e. Curry, and freeze it by portion size. She does not waste food. We all should be this thrifty and unwasteful. A woman to be greatly admired!!Overprepare, then go with the flow.

So are you suggesting she was going to eat all those packs of doughnuts, fruit yoghurts, several pots of coleslaw/humous etc plus various salad items and fruit - none if which are suitable for freezing, I might add - all within the 24hrs or so they would remain edible?
Yes, by all means buy meat, fish, vegetables, bread/bakery items which can be frozen or immediately converted into something like soup which can then be frozen. But, what on earth do you do with several packets of iced doughnuts, numerous tubs of coleslaw etc and why buy it if you're not going to use it?
I only buy what I know I will use and wave the rest for other people to benefit from. To do otherwise is sheer greed. I don't know this woman so I'm purely judging on what I saw in that programme clip.0 -
On the occasions i drink tea i can easily make two drinks out of one tea bag because i like my tea really weak. No builders tea for me.
Oh and on occasions ive been known to reuse cooking foil.:o
I always reuse foil. When I've coughed up for the expensive stuff from Lakeland I sometimes put it through the dishwasher.:o0 -

I didn't see this programme.
But I do know not to believe everything I see on Tv
A lot of it was probably staged, as it is on many of these types of show.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Doughnuts freeze well, coleslaw can also be frozen and then used as an ingredient or rinsed and frozen and then have Mayo or whatever dressing added later.
As for the salad stuff, she could make a soup for the freezer, have a really nice salad or use the ingredients in other ways.
I admire Ilona, although she does sadden me with her eat by date/food as fuel approach, she is an extremely genuine lady with an extremely thrifty mind. If you read her blog you'll understand why she chooses to live like she does, in order to enjoy her life.

Who said coleslaw yoghurts etc have to be ate by the sell by or even use by date? I've yoghurts there in the fridge from when I was babysitting three weeks ago, I'm working through them
Iced buns can be frozen
Ilona is vegetarian , no point in her buying meat or fish is there?
If you care to watch the programme in question you will see it was purely an exercise in what you can buy reduced priced
She was given a fiver to spend in all the supermarkets to see what she could get
Ilona has shared on her blog many times how the ys shoppers share the spoils and don't just all grab leaving nothing for anyone else
You would have hated me on Christmas Eve. Behind a stack of ys lambs kidneys which everyone else was by passing, I found FOUR half legs of lamb for £1 each, and I took the lot ( along with the lambs kidneys) had the last one last week
Do I feel greedy? Nope
I did however give one to a friend0 -
